I SO want a pity as my next dog. Beautiful pups....

Has anyone here ever tried to train the PBT to be a LGD or a herding dog? I want to have a proper farm dog when we get more land, and I already have my "house alarm dog" and "terrier/small animal removal" dog slots filled. If PBT could make good LGD I'd be even more excited, and I think it's a job they could likely do well, seeing as how diverse and smart they are...

a pit bullnot not be LGD per se. Mine does not like other animals near the chickens and will alarm. Go to ultimate pit bull forum for lots of great information. I presently can't stand photo bucket so did not upload photo.

My female pitbull (Sevile)raised some baby turkeys acouple of years ago. They would follow her around the yard and sleep next to her! They would even play. My oldest (Coupe) has learned to herd the ducks back into the pen at night..but ducks are very easy to herd. I trust my dogs 100% with my animals, but I also raised them all from pups with the animals.
If we hear the chickens at night, we let the dogs out and they know to chase whatever it is bothering the chickens away. If you have the time and patients to train a puppy, you could have a great LG pitbull! They are extreamly smart dogs and learn fast.

Ok. My dog has high drive she is a great worker and will run off intruders. However she will not be loose with the chickens. It has nothing too do with how she is raised. She has received probably 10 x the training of another household, she is high drive and it is not fair to put her in that kind of situation.Or fair to the chickens.

Can you explain what you mean by "High drive"? Are you talking about High prey drive or shes just a hyper dog?

Coupe, She is an amazing dog. She is high prey drive which is great to use for all sorts of training. She is wonderful with kids, great with people of all ages. She is not 'hyper' although an inexperienced person may read her as such.

As per previous post...go to ultimate pitbull forum if you need information or discussions on prey drive etc. Plenty there. Plenty of experienced pit bull folks there. As this is a backyard chicken forum, I would not recommend pit bulls (nor many breeds) for LG that can directly access livestock.

My dog is kept on the other side of the fence from the chickens. The dog will run off other animals but I would not put her (or other dogs) in with the chickens when we are not there. That would not be a recommendation to make on an open forum.
