post sour/impacted crop... still not emptying right...

yeah it might. My foolish girls eat anything. Styrofoam, rubber, anything white..... Oh and for that joke "why did the chicken cross the road?" ... for my girls apparently it is to get to the hospital.... I live across from our rural community hospital and they love to forage on the front lawn!!! I get bugged at work. I am a nurse!!

I don't want to be a Debbie Downer but let me put this out there. There is a condition called Crop Stasis. Basically it is the crops inability to empty over night. There is a post here with pics. I will see if I can find it for you. After humanely putting his chicken down, the owner performed a necropsy and found that his chicken's intestines were actually blocked. This blockage prevented the crop from emptying. I believe this is what my chicken is suffering with. I have emptied her crop several times, taken her to a vet who prescribed amazing antibiotics and she got all better. Goes back out to the coop, is fine for a week and then back in the house with a full crop again. Twice. This time, regardless of superheroic efforts her crop will not empty on it's own. She is now refusing to eat and will barely drink. A friend will come over in the morning to help us........A sad fact of chicken keeping, not every one can be saved.

So sorry. I am hoping this is not the case. She is still passing stool. And has a good appetite. I don't know whether having cut into the crop would cause issues with emptying or not. She does seem to be empty in the morning without anything in the box to eat. I think I will try the nystatin and see how it goes. It will be great to get her back into the coop. They are currently in a very large box with a chicken wire cover at the edge of my attached greenhouse. She wakes early and is very vocal!!! I do understand she might not make it, but will cross that bridge if we have to.

just try to keep her eating a good quality yogurt while treating her so she gets the benefit of probiotics.

One question from the post you sent me.... what is a crop bra???? Oh and they are getting some delicious Astro Balkan style greek yogurt(plain) with a 3% milk fat and I add buttermilk to that. I add some acidophilis and BL some too. I mix the eggs with buttermilk and just slightly cook them so they are still runny. And some unsweetened apple sauce. Any other suggestions???

sounds like your doing a great job taking care of these girls, and being a nurse I'm sure has been a plus too.
