Alas, the Adorable Zip. He is a cochin/serama cross. He was 3 wks. old in this picture, but is 4 months now. He has slightly feathered legs and the fluff of a cochin, but has the stance and tail of a serama. He has the amazing temperments of both!

I have a few mutts running around. Most are Seabright crosses descended from Peepers, My first ever chicken.

Well, an Easter Egger in not really a breed though, just a variety that doesn't conform to the standard, right? And doesn't Ameraucana and Araucana make up easter eggers? (Though not always together) Just wondered how you can tell if he has one or the other. Thanks!

That rooster in particular has duckwing genes, a common thing Easter Eggers have (but not Ameraucanas) He also has yellow legs and a very tall pea comb, signifying a lot of single combed parents and grandparents. Also, he only holds barring in his beard and tail feathers, indicating he's either got barred columbian in him or just partial barring, which means his grandparents or greatgrandparents were barred.

Ah, okay. I was under the impression that all easter eggers were descended from Araucana and/or Ameraucana. I didn't know that the colored egg gene could come from elsewhere. And know that you point it out, the barring is only on his head and tail. Thanks! I have learned some new stuff!

Most hatcheries use their stock that was from the orginal blue egg laying stock. Some (underline here), have mixed in other breeds of chickens to get what you see today. You know at one time that what is now called the Ameraucana was orginally breed as a Araucana.
Anyway, there are alot of people mixing (including folks on here) all knds of breeds together with the blue egg gene chickens and calling them Easter Eggers. Myself, I'm keeping them as pure as I can get them, with maybe an exception to adding in Ameraucana or Araucana (more Blue egg genes). I will not breed to any rooster (EE, or other) that have yellow or white legs (slate, willow, or blue only), and to any rooster that doesn't carry the muff, beard, or tuft genes.

Just my ideal of a true EE.​

Here are a couple of my mutts. The first is a Light Brahma/Salmon Faverolles pullet named Isabelle.

These two are EE/Salmon Faverolles girls, Frick and Frack. They lay blue/green eggs.
