post your chicken coop pictures here!

So, this is the one I was talking about. For whatever reason, none of the pages had a "quote" option....I think it was because I was using my email web browser? Anyway, went to Chrome, found the post, with quote option this time, and here it is! I have now been through 50 pages and, don't get me wrong, there are so many AWESOME and AMAZING coops on this thread! I am so impressed by all the elaborate coops. Yet, this one, kinda Outhouseish? appeals to me because it fits in with the design and placement of my garden area. Someday, I do want a small stationary coop with a "rotational grazing" run, if all goes well with my chicken-keeping! That being said, I have a lot more pages to look at here and I'm sure I will continue to be impressed!

HI chic-a-doodle.Thank you for the compliment on my coop. The inside dimensions are 3x5x 3ft high. The outside dimensions are 5 1/2 ft tall it has 2 1/2 ft under coop as part of the run. I haven't gotten my chicks yet I plan on getting 5 hens. THE nest BOXES are 1x1 do you like the way I gave them each a home? I like keeping it fun .
I love your designs!

I just got a new bird. Its black not not sure what it is. Given to me as a cull from a chicken/egg farm and was badly abused by roosters like mine only worse. Her butt is naked!! She is proud but definitely the bottom of the order. Anyway she can't fly because her wings are clipped so I made her a lower perch but so far she just hides behind the feeders. I did see one hen on my high perch tonight so maybe there is hope after all :). I'll get some pics tomorrow.

Yes, blue bird of, I love your houses! Very nicely done and creative. I would have never thought of doing this. [I sent this before I learned about Ovations and adding comments....I'm so used to Facebook, but,....I'm learning how to use this site "as I go" because reading the instructions only go so far into my mind! ]

Here is a pic of her. Hard to get a good angle. She still won't come outside to range. Anyone know what breed she is?

Do you have a water softener? I think that can remove most of the problem minerals. But in reading just now, they are replaced with sodium which may not be the best thing for drinking either. Still, I think it might be worth doing to save the nasty scale buildup on the faucets, toilet valves, etc. I think it would also help keep your new copper pipes from getting "clogged arteries"

We had a water softener with the salts in it and it didn't last long. Yep, I agree the salt is definitely something to consider especially with chickens/pets. Wonder if the copious minerals in water contribute to kidney stones in humans or chickens?
Keep on with those 5 gallon bottles for drinking, I think you are right, you don't have much of an option other than a pitcher filter like Brita. Our prior house was on a neighborhood well and it was hard. Not to the level of yours but scale would show on the sink faucets and I would have to periodically clean the holes in the sprayer in the kitchen sink. Current house is on a well that just serves this house. I think hardness is 7 whereas it was 11-12 at the other house and we don't get scale on the faucets. VERY lucky to not have iron or H2S like some areas of the state.
We had an under-the-sink purifying water system that had a warranty on it. Guess what? Less than 3 months and there were leaks all over the place because of the mineral blockage both in the water system and in the faucet. Had to replace the faucet. Not fun. The water heaters don't last long - about 3 years before they start sounding like microwave popcorn. Shower heads need replacing often too. CLR is a joke. Don't waste money on it. I use Muriatic pool acid once a year to get the bathtub clean for a little while, and use Lime-A-Way on toilet and bath faucets because ordinary house cleaners are a waste of money. Bleach doesn't even work to remove stains from mineral buildup.

Not extend an out of theme thread, I have calcium and my old well was once determined to be 40 hardness but the water softener did resolve most of the problem. On that well I also used a whole house filter to remove particles which damage the softener mechanism. Don't know the hardness number of my new well but it is all plastic and doesn't need a filter. I can taste the iron but the softener keeps it under control and I no longer see the calcium floaties in a glass of tap water. I have 2 hard water taps, kitchen sink cold and upstairs bath sink cold. All other lines are soft and all plumbing is plastic (my favorite for many reasons)
After 30 years of living here I've heard and tried everything legally approved. Our water is supposedly well water but in this drought the last decade has been the worst for mineralizations. Our permits require copper piping so no galvanized or PVC allowed for housing. We've had our brand new remodeled kitchen with fancy sink for 41/2 years -- its all crusted with minerals to the point the caulked joints have come loose - some parts have even turned white/green. While contractor is working on the new block wall will have him replace the kitchen faucet. Again, not fun.

Thanks for all the input, guys!

Poor baby! I took in an abused hen who was shy at first. But after she got accustomed to the flock she became viciously mean to the docile and smaller hens so we had to re-home her into an egg-layer flock where there were no roos. I won't take in any more adult birds. I introduce only pullets to my existing flock and let them get acquainted between fencing for at least a week or more before integrating completely. Contrary to what we'd like chickens are just not nice to each other.

Very true.

BTW, salt is used to back flush the resin beads. Once the beads are reduced the salt is no longer present. The taste in soft water is the resin, not salt. I believe the right softener combined with a good filter would reduce the problem significantly. It may take more than one stage. Industrial operations which have such issues use several stages designed to remove different minerals. I've forgotten the name of the system but there is a softener system which uses tanks which are recycled that remove a lot of minerals. It's not as cheap as a home softener but very effective.

My problem is I'm lazy and don't want to wait til they are big enough to defend themselves so I thought I'd try adding some adults. I raised some from my own eggs with my own rooster but had trouble even then keeping them alive. Even though they hatched in the same coop they were still attacked. This spring I will try chicks kept separate again, it's just a lot of work to maintain two areas with feeders and drinkers etc. I was hoping to simplify. I guess I need to move all my stone pile and extend the coop to allow for a brood area :-(( Does anyone know how to turn off this stupid typing helper that 're-writes almost every word !@#$%^&* Don't answer that, I'll do it, just being lazy :)
