post your chicken coop pictures here!

EPIC FAIL!!! I put my pullets in my nice New tractor. My dogs would not leave them alone for 5 minutes. So to keep from stressing my chicks out, I grabbed a hold of the tractor and moved it forward about twenty feet. Then I noticed I had steam rolled two of them.

I will be redesigning this death trap!

Man, so sorry... I was going to ask about how you'd keep from doing that when you originally posted, but got side tracked

Hope you get it re-configured to prevent that from happening again.

Finishing this up now. Was going to be 4x4 ish for a couple of hens. Ended up 6.25 x 4.5 with and extra 1.5' kick out in the back side since I had left over materials. Should house 3 comfortably. About 5' tall going down to 4.5'.

I didn't do an attached egg box with a lift top. Instead have a swinging door to gather eggs.

Get my 3 pullets tomorrow!

I hope you are really skinny, and really tall, with really long arms... If they lay at the other end, it's gonna be a long tight stretch to reach them through that small door. I guess you could enter the run and get inside for them that way. Just hope they don't escape when you open the door to go in.

It isn't shown, but behind that little door is a dedicated nesting box. I never considered they wouldn't lay in the nesting box and instead in the coop. Used a similar layout for my mothers coop and I think in 3 years she never had one egg in her coop. Hope I'm right in this case!

Tika75 - One BYC post said they hang socks filled with mothballs around the outside of their coop and it keeps the snakes away. Couldn't hurt to try it?

I'm thinking about trying that. My mom used sulphur on the ground around the outside of her fence and house, but I don't want my animals getting into that. She lived in a swampy area and never had snakes in the back yard but would in the front.

So what kind of floor did u go with
We left a gap 3" wide between the boards and put down hardware cloth for good ventilation. We will add 1"x2" floor strips on either side to secure from predators and keep toes from pulling it up. I will put hardware cloth around the bottom as well and have a place to put snake replant where the birds can't get to it. The frame on sides pictures will be forth coming soon.

would try adding a flap of hardware cloth that folds down when you lift the tractor. This way it will scoot the birds along and keep them from getting near the wheels. So sorry once again.

I looked it over today and have decided to put a floor in the coop part. The chicks will either go into the coop and be elevated or stay in the run where I can see them. A lack of visibility was a large part of the problem.

It seems so obvious now.

I'll post pics when I'm done.
