post your chicken coop pictures here!

Thats interesting I have used it in the back yard to retrain an escape dog.....  She hit that once and I could her her yelp from the other side of the house...  she tested it in another area....  that did it.  I never had to switch it on again.  yep the city.

I used a remote collar which worked very well and didnt require any fencing or posts just a small unit in the center of the dog yard (a circular area) and a collar for the dog. There is a similar one that uses a burried wire in the ground as a barier which can be made any shape or size. Unfortunately neither of these will keep anything out.......:) BTW, hog wire won't stop some horses so we used to put a line at the top of fencing to prevent them from laying on it and breaking it down. Some pets just have no respect :)

but electic fences are too dangerous to allow in residential areas

Here is the ordinance across the street from me, it's #1 on the list of prohibited fences...

15.36.050 - Prohibited fences.

The following fences are prohibited:

A. Electrically charged fences;
B. Barbed wire fences in all zones except general industrial and limited industrial classifications of the zoning ordinance;
C. Barbed wire shall be at a minimum height above ground level of seven feet and shall be directed inward;
D. Fences erected in violation of this chapter;
E. Unsafe fences;
F. Unstable or insecure fences;
G. Chain link or "cyclone" type fences in front yards or corner side yards in residential zoned property.

(Ord. 97-0-34 § 3: prior code § 30.05)

Sylvester017, snakes, ummm 20 Guage ASAP! Especially if the viper type. I don't mind the ones we have here, pretty harmless until you step on one batefoot. Definitely makes me a girly girl when it happens, except for the language I use.

Snakes around here are mostly indigenous rattlers and those get disposed of promptly -- but once in a while you hear about someone's pet boa on the loose! My DD had a friend that gave her a baby boa that grew to 6 feet and then died in it's aquarium - gave me the shivers. It got out one time and she stepped on it out of the shower scaring it and it bit her. I was so glad to see it finally had died.

An over view of where I live. Couldn't possibly be any predators hiding about.

Lived here for a year, haven't heard about any bears being around. Have most other predators about though. We have deer in our yard from time to time, I've never considered them a predator to my hens, only to the garden.

Beautiful photo! I get nostalgic for my rural farm days! About deer - they are not so much predators to chickens as they are very spooky and unpredictable animals. A suddenly startled deer (which doesn't take much to startle them) will bolt suddenly doing damage to humans, property, fences, vehicles, pets, other animals, even running into buildings. They are a nuisance to the garden of course, but deadly weapons when startled. A body can get skewered by those pointed sharp hooves or big antlers (which a deer did massive damage with its antlers to our rental car on vacation). I never drive my own vehicle but rent a car for vacations or long trips because deer will run break-neck-speed head-on into vehicles on the highways. I saw a video of a deer that jumped into a city bus and totally thrashed the seats and broke the front windshield in its panic to get out again and it was just a young thing with no antlers but boy those hooves were deadly - bus driver was lucky to live through it.

Deer and cars don't mix, had plenty of my own close calls with them bolting out in front of me and keep a keen eye out for them, as they are everywhere up by me... Actually did contact one when I was younger, bolted in front of me, slammed on the brakes and it was enough to miss the dear, that was until it decided to pull a 180° and put itself right back in front of me... Just a little bump at that point but enough to take out the front grill of the car...

Last time I was visiting my father in law in Arkansas I asked him how the doors and read quarter panel of his car got all dented up on one side, he said a herd of deer just T-Boned the car one night, no damage to the cars front fender or front end, just from the door back where apparently multiple deer just bounced off the car when he was driving down the road...

FarmerPhronc nice scenery! I will need to look on Google to see if I can find mine. We have no bobcats or bears but all the other critters you mentioned, yes we have them. Freaking coyotes and raccoons are in my yard constantly, hawks overhead, eagles occasionally and the owls. Falcons sometimes. I really hope the osprey return to nest back in the woods this year. They ran the hawks off.They never tried to catch a bird just circled and cried out causing panic.

Anyone out there with a skylight in their coop? If so can you share some info and pics? Wonder if the can type would work here instead of the large window type due to tree limbs. Looking into it, pop bottle one is looking good.
