I got to work on the coop again today. I built the trusses and got them set in place ready for plywood. I need to check it for plumb then start with the sheathing. I've never used OSB (chip board) plywood for exterior walls before. Hope I don't have to replace it someday. I'm going to paint it with exterior paint. I'm afraid to paint the inside cause the chickens will eat it.

Nice job.... Paint both sides of your wood before you put it up.... OSB gets flaky.... painting it will keep it nicer longer. Use latex it wont hurt the chickens....

I used OSB only on the roof. Painted both sides. Covered with felt and shingles. It's been a year and holding up in hot, humid Louisiana. I used very high quality plywood everywhere else but someone gave me some OSB for free do I used it on the roof.

I saw OSB3 somewhere online that is supposed to be used for humid conditions. I bought whatever they had at home depot. It was half the price of T1-11. I'll paint the heck out of it.

excellent job.... time to get out the rotozip for the pop door... I sooo love mine... I need a new cutter for it though... Dont ask.

Woo Hoo I love it when I have an excuse to buy a new power tool.... They have sooo many uses... Just dont try to enlarge the mounting hole for the door handle on a sliding glass door with one....

BAD idea on my part.... I should have known better.

Here's my coop! I could use some advice; I live in northern VT, it gets cold here. For sure negative teens, occasionally as low as -35ish. Should I insulate this thing? 6 hens in there, deep litter. The coop is tight but single walled. I could run an extension cord for a lamp but I don't want to. My coop is about 7'x8' and 8' tall. If I did insulate, any reccomendations for cheap insulation?

With your weather it's a tricky balance between good protection from the elements but with the right amount of ventilation. Moisture/dampness/humidity are the worst issues along with ammonia odors from chicken waste so ventilation venting at the top/roofline is important since open windows would be too drafty. As for cold temps, chickens will huddle together for warmth. My girls use the nestboxes for ultimate warmth but it makes for daily cleaning on our part. Hey, if my girls are happy in the boxes, I don't deprive them. If you do decide to insulate either your roof or a couple walls you'll have to cover it with plywood so the girls don't peck at the insulation. Chickens are really pecky. BTW your coop build is beautiful. I love the natural wood stain. Hope your area doesn't get hit with another bummer of a winter!
