post your chicken coop pictures here!

I would get that sand right out of your coops. That stuff is no good in cold climates at all. It provides no insulation and it does not keep dry in the wet and cold. People have made their chickens sick with respiratory issues by using sand in the winter coop. Switch to straw.

I didn't like straw at first because the strands get everywhere and it's hard to sweep up -- but in the long run I'm glad we chose it over shavings. The hens love chewing on it and throwing it over their back -- even when they come across strands of it on the ground they'll stop to nibble and throw it over themselves and walk on. However I don't find that straw stays particularly dry and we check it daily for any moisture spots from poops, rain leaks, or the rare broken egg in a box. But since I've never used anything but straw in the coop I can't compare it to other beddings -- I just like the fact that our hens seem to really like it.

This is my new coop build. It's 8'x10' the door is heavy duty critter proof. There will be another wall and door 3' in. The first 3' will be used as storage. Going to pick up my pine lap siding from the saw mill Tuesday. It started out 6'x6' foot design then my lovely wife got involved and now it's a chicken mansion. I think she has plans for mr to live in it also.

Lol. It's ways hunting season.

I love coming in and looking at the coops.

Nature has blessed us with two weeks of silly warm temps (for january) in the midlands. We WILL pay for it in february, but I've been trying to take advantage of it.) The architectural committee finally sajd yes to my plans. (No problems with having it or chooks, they were just all on holiday vacay)

So the work on the open air coop commenced. I should be able to keep up with construction updates on my blog.

More pullets come may 1.

Still no eggs from my 28 week olds.

I have a logistical question. I went looking for a rain barrel in town. Tractor Supply. Nope. Lowes. Nope. So, I get a line a guy that is supposed to have rain barrels. I end up with a 12.00 blue plastic barrel that supposedly used to have industrial soap in it. Now, if I clean this thing out enough, will it be chicken safe, or will I just end up killing them all (which I don't want to do).
