HELP ME!!!
ep.gif

2 baby ducklings of unknown origin were rescued from the side of a busy road by a couple of well meaning children today. The teachers put them in a box with towels to keep them warm and called me!!!! What do I know of ducklings?! I'm a chicken momma. Will a broody hen that just hatched chicks adopt them?

They can't be more then a day... 2 at most old. Still wobbly on legs. I know the chick starter feed I have will be ok for the ducks but that's it... Should I keep them same temp in brooder? Can I leave an open bowl of water or a chick waterer? HELP... NEED ANSWERS FAST.

Hey TJordan

Just my opinion but if it was me, I would try and find out from the children where they found the ducklings?

If there is water near there, momma duck is probably not too far away and I would be trying to find her.

If you take the ducklings back to the area and they are peeping, you may just hear momma respond.

Reuniting them with her would probably be the best thing for them.

Other than that, I have no suggestions sorry. Like you, I’m a chicken momma and know zip about ducks, except they quack and are cute!

I thought of that as well. Teacher asked kids and one said she thought momma was dead. Several dead ducklings and at least 1 adult found on that road today. They look to be orphans.

There are lots of 'duck experts' on BYC, maybe start a new thread under 'Ducks'; I am sure there will be lots of people with helpful advice.

I hope you are able to save them; poor little munchkins.

Thanks. I finally got both drinking. They are still iffy on the feeder though. One is very active while the other is so mellow and laid back. I hope it's ok.

If you have no iron Poly-Vi-Sol children's liquid vitamins a drop on the side of the beak will help keep them fortified until they perk up. If mom and other chicks are dead the mellow one you have might be injured internally. Any wounds? In any event a drop of vitamin per day for a week should help with immune fortification. Keep them warm but I have no idea at what temps. BYC should have some duckling threads and Google several internet websites covering duckling care. I'm always coming across them when I don't need them! Many baby duck breeds love water so a little shallow pan where they can swim around in it and dive in it might be fun for them after they revive. GL!
