Question for you guys: Any advice on a better roofing system for my run? I've currently got aviary netting draped from the roof of the coop and the tree to the edges of the fence... But it inevitably gets gaps and I end up with chickens all over the yard. For now, we're just letting them free range during the day every day, but I would like the ability to keep them contained part of the time.

I like the aviary netting because you can't really see it. But it's not working. Also, I'd like to be able to stand up and walk around in there. I would love something easier than building a wooden frame (since it's a very large area), but I can't really think of any other options... I thought I would check with you all.. What do you think?

This picture was taken while we were still building, but you get the idea... The fence is completed and there's aviary netting draped from the coop and from the tree... and there are chickens running around outside the run laughing at me.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide!

I really cant help with your run issue. Its a problem for a lot of people. I will say that open top even with the netting will be easy pickings for four footed predators.(fox, coyote etc.) For that reason I made our run wood frame, long and narrow with a removable top that slides off so I could stand inside and clean. Not ideal but seems to work. Good luck :)

Thanks for your response, ChickenFever. I'm surprised to hear that foxes can get into open-top runs. Clearly, I still have a lot to learn. We don't have coyotes where I live, but we have plenty of foxes, so I do want to be prepared for them. The hardware cloth is almost 4 ft high, with about 6-8 inches buried under ground and a brick ring around the bottom.. so I doubt anything will be able to dig underneath.. I was honestly only concerned about keeping chickens in and hawks out of the top, but maybe that was naive of me..

I am new as well, and still have a lot to learn too. I only know that from watching a video on you tube where someone had set a camera recording all night. A fox showed up and tried every crazy way possible to get into the coop. They had open top with netting. Well, eventually he climbed the fencing somehow and the silly thing got in the run and could not get out!!!!!

Unfortunately he got a couple chickens. Predators seem to be very smart

You may never have an issue. But 4 foot is pretty low. I would try and seal it up if you could somehow. Maybe an electric fence around the run? Good luck

My peeps can't free range so I keep then in their 4x8x6 coop/run. Hubby built a fantastic roof. I've posted before about a family of hawks living in my yard. Mother hawk raised her 2 babies in one of my pine trees. They spent the summer looking down at us in the driveway while we built the coop. They can't get in the coop. They are flying around the neighborhood and frequently come back to the yard and hang out in the trees. They are very interested in my chickens. They land in the yard about 2 feet from the coop looking at my peeps. It's illegal to kill them, I really don't want to. I watched them grow up. I know they would snatch my girls if they could. I worry about them stressing my girls. There's not a lot I can do. I'm very soon going to make a moveable run for them and will have to make sure these hawks can't get in. Probably out of cattle panel. The funny thing is, mom hasn't taught her young to be quiet while hunting. These are the noisiest birds! You can hear them all over the neighborhood.
