This would be a great time to put up a link to the heating pad brooder thread, don't you think, Deb? I've used heat lamps in my coops without any issues whatsoever, one just has to use them with good common sense, but for those just starting out and needing a way to brood in the coop, the heating pad brooder is a great way to do it but without the fear of fires.
I've used the HP brooder setup outside in temps down to 20s-30s at night, so no worries about it being too cold out there to use it. It's easy to use, safe, cheap to set up and the chicks do very well under....more so than under a heat lamp.
