I want to plant some flowers around mine, is there any I should avoid or any type they won't eat?
RE: The pic of the nest box with ladder roost in front. Thats a good idea but there is no roost outside the box lip provided as an alternate. I see the hens roosting on the box lip, not the roost? I was going to include the pic but couldnt figure out how to cut and paste in this editor. Anyway i made a simlar roost in front of my nest boxes but added a flat 2x4 about 10 inches in front of the lip and a little higher. All mine were used to roosting in the nest boxes but now they all roost on my new roost setup. Im a happy camper. I try to design roosts so they can fly up in stages with lots of wing room and just hop or step into the nest. Its a tricky balance to get them close enough so they dont have to flap to get in but far enough away they cant poop in the nests sitting on the roost.

Some plants that aren't good for them might just be ignored. I think chickens pretty much know what they shouldn't eat. For example, hostas are supposed to be bad. We have several (been there before we owned the place) but the chickens have never touched them (other than to use them for shade). On the other hand there are two variegated ones in the front of the house that the woodchucks chew to the ground. They don't eat the all green ones though.
