post your chicken coop pictures here!

I don't think I will ever raise chickens without a rooster they protect the hens they crow in the mornings I like to hear that in he morning and so do the neighbors they say they don't mind it. He has the perfect crow he is sweet protects the hens I couldn't ask for anything more. So I am keeping a few more roosters for breeding I think I am going to breed Cochins and i have my silkies ready for breeding so right there is three roosters agressive or not he is t going any where do anyone with young children in the family can keep there kids away.

My 2 year old grandson was hit in the face 2 times before i could intervene. Fortunately he protected his face with his arms or he would be blind. I have scars on my legs from those same roosters. They imediately were butchered and a rule was born.

I had my fun with raising bantams with a very pretty and cocky little rooster. I have all large breeds now so its much safer and easier to buy them when i need more. I can then choose to try a new breed or two as well.

If i didnt have children and my property was zoned for chickens i would have them too but they would be de-spurred and handled from chicks to ensure docility. I didnt handle the other ones and paid the price as did my hens, they had no feathers on their backs.

I am the other way.... I prefer to have roosters.... and no children will be allowed in with them. Meaning if kids are around the roosters get locked up.

I have the same rule with horses.... Stuff happens even with the best of them... the most trust worthy docile well conditioned .... No unsupervised childeren allowed.... if they are small enough to not understand a hand gets kept on the child at all times for a quick visit.

Matter of fact I have a similar rule for non savvy adults... After 50 years with horses and 25 years with chickens. it takes someone with experience to notice when things are about to go south.

. A break even point. I'm happy to get $3 to $4 a dozen to help off set the cost of the organic feed I give them. I got into having my own after I retired from the farm/ranch I worked at because I got spoiled having fresh eggs available. I only have 5 hens. They lay more eggs than my wife and I can eat. So I attempt to sell them or just give them away.

Might be time to look into how to freeze eggs (no not in the shell!) for winter. I had 7 pullets laying this last winter but a dearth of eggs the prior winter. Wish I have planned ahead instead of having to buy eggs for Christmas cookie baking! This year I either get a few chicks to stuff under my broody BA or freeze some eggs in the fall (ASSUMING I can figure out when the girls are going to shut down).

O well I had my rooster just show up at my house two years ago and he is the calmest thing I was supposed and is very good with the lady's. The only time he is agressive with them is when you first let them out to he looks like a freak show and runs around after the hens but after you give them there food and mounts at least one he calms down and is the best rooster you could ask for I just keep the tips of his Spurs rounded off so they aren't sharp I do it every 1-2 months

Ya I agree with you just like that lady and her kid that climbed over the fence at the zoo in Ohio and the gorilla did nothing to the kid but they shot the gorilla. Keep an eye on your kid and I relise things happen but you would think like my mom said if you were going somwhere like that you would keep your kid by your side and pay attention. So it's the same thing around here with roosters that are agressive weather they flog you or not keep an eye on your kids. Is all I can say

Personally, I see no reason to keep an aggressive/mean rooster, especially if there are kids around. You might feel differently in a few years if you have kids of your own. Or God forbid, a guest with kids has one of their kids attacked and you end up facing a law suit. Part of the joy of the farm animals is the interaction with the kids. My kids are all grown, but my grand kids love to be out around the animals. You can have excellent, people friendly roosters who care for and protect the hens from threats without being mean and flogging you or your kids. Being mean and aggressive towards you has nothing to do with protecting the hens. It's purely a dominance issue.

Roosters are very easy & cheap to replace. People are giving them away because they aren't allowed to have them. Look on Craigs List. Or you can spend a little and get a whole passel of them real cheap from any of the hatcheries or from a breeder/local chicken farmer. Then just choose the one you like best and send the rest to freezer camp.
