post your chicken coop pictures here!

I spoke online here last year with a fellow that keeps poultry in Death Valley...  140 degrees.....   He used carpet and kept it wet to keep them from burning their feet...  and lots and lots of shade

Now that's just crazy sauce! Who wants to live there in the heat, let alone go outside to care for animals

yep and he had geese and ducks too.   I have lived in a desert environment all my life   so understand the draw.   Its not for every one...  just like living in the arctic.   Tending animals happens in the early am or after dusk.   The animals adapt and lay low in the extreme heat.     feed requirements are a bit different too.

I'm thinking there is a reason ducks and geese aren't native residents of places like Death Valley.

I have a couple of big mixing trays with a 2 inch thick cement block and fill it to the top of block with water and an ice 2 liter. Did not have to convince mine at all to use it. With in 10 minutes they figured it out. Some sit on block, some on the ice bottle and some stand in the water.

where there is water....   but Probably not perminant residents.  Its a really big desert.  but on migratory paths.

That is just crazy heat wow!

Here in Central Florida we r running 93 with a humidity of 70%. All you do is walk outside and you are dripping.I dipped 18 chickens in a 5 gallon bucket of water today for the first time. I was afraid the fan and ice bottles and solid shade just were not enough. They were very sedentary compared to usual. The bucket worked. Bo more panting or droopy wings for the rest of the afternoon

WOW i would hate that.

I might try that as well. didn't get around to doing that today as it was raining and I had them locked up in the tractor today because I was moving their portable fencing around and mowed down the weeds that have managed to grow up in there. Got it all set up now so that they'll have an old truck that doesn't run as a spot to hide out from the sun from, and dust bathe in.

...Anyway, I put a large shop fan in the work area screen, blowing into the coop toward the "Turkey" door on medium to reduce dust but it added quite a bit of air movement. They are all walking around in circles in front of it. One of the issues with my setup is it is "necessarily" on the west facing wall of the barn where there is no shade except for the coop. By noon all the shade is gone. Unfortunately it's the only place I can put it for many reasons. If my budget allows I may add an 8x9 foot roof attached to the coop for extra shade in the run, next year. I'm still hoping to use the run as a green house for my wife's illegal Texas trees but that may not happen since it has to be heated in the winter. All my play money is long gone. I'm putting out fires (figuratively) now and will be in that mode for at least a couple of years yet.

I hear you!!! We've been planning for a new coop for 5 years with plans to lay a slab for it and put a patio roof over the complete coop and run. 5 years later we finally did it - it took a lot of focus, patience, and planning to get to our goal and still there are details pending like getting a better ladder ramp, finish attaching the additional 4x4 kennel run, etc etc. Our focus shifted momentarily when we decided to get a dual fuel generator for the times outages occur during brown-outs in summer or heavy storms in winter. We keep our feed and frozen chicken treats stored in a garage fridge and would hate to lose anything in a power failure:

I thought LAST YEAR was crazy weather but this year has it beat for crazy weather! What used to be SoCalif "June Gloom" (overcast mornings until 9 or 10 a.m.) has turned into a heatwave starting as early as 7 a.m. In July every year we get 2 or 3 rainy/sprinkly cool days but THIS YEAR we got a couple of light sprinkle days in June and then mid-June the heatwaves started very early and haven't let up yet! I'm tired of 100o long long days! We built a patio roof over the coop and run to cover from rain but so far it's been a shady haven for the chickens during this heat.

I moved away from So Cal 37 years ago to escape the heat and over population. It is far FAR worse now that it was then. Miss family, don't miss anything else.

Well got out of the pool to put everything away before the winds, rain, thunder lightening, and possible hail came.to find that we only got a few sprinkles thunder and the power flickered but people a few minutes away got absolutely hammered. And the day before this we only got a few sprinkles also and we were to have a thunderstorm but now the sun is back out and shinning so much for getting any rain.
