Looks like it's gonna turn out pretty nice when it's finished

well here is my coop! its not done yet but we will finish it tomorrow.





I put my dog in the run for a size refrence.

she is a small dog about the size of a maltese

do you think this coop will be big enough for 30 or less chickens? they will be out almost all day and only in at night and we will have a lot or roosts in there.

Probably more then 30.

What are the dimensions? If you go by the recommended 4 sq feet per chicken, you need it to be 120 sq feet. But some say that 2 sq ft is enough. Our old coop was 2 sq feet per and our chickens weren't even fully grown and it was WAY too small. Also, for 30 chickens, you'd need about 30 feet of roost (or maybe 25 would be enough) and that doesn't look big enough to accommodate that long of a roost.

Well he roost is going to be 5 feet long and here will be 4 of them and then some corner roosts

the reason I need it to house 30 birds is because my mom has a friend whos husband owns a chicken farm. and when her friend heard I liked chickens she asked if I wanted to come over and see them. so ofcourse i said yes because who wouldnt want to see some chickens? but I was not expecting the kind of farm they have. its like a FARM farm they have a very big thing going on over there because every two weeks on wensday they put several thousand eggs in the incubator to hatch (huge incubators like 7 feet tall and 8-9 feet deep and 5 feet wide and they have 5 of them! with big wheels inside to turn the eggs) these incubators hold about 100 trays of eggs and each tray holds about 90 to 100 eggs so again BIG incubators! anyways they have a lot of pretty chickens because they are all mix breeds and some of the roos are HUGE!!! I mean their wattles are 4-5 inches long and the roos them selves are about 3 feet tall! anyway when I get there they take me around and show me everything and then when we go to look at the breeding house (last thing) he has 30 eggs waiting for me! and of course because they had been so nice I did not want to say no because they had these eggs out before I had even got there and those eggs had been laid that morning. so thats how I ended up with 30 eggs along with the 6 I had that are due to hatch the 21st. so I need the coop to hold these birds till I can get rid of some roos and know that they are roos.

and I already have 3-5 people who want "organic" chicken and "organic" eggs so no problem there! and if I still have to many eggs I can donate them to the church! they are always cooking things so they could probobly use them. I plan to keep most ifnot all the hens and one roo per 8 hens because the roos that bred what will come out of these eggs were very docile.

That coop looks small to me for 30 birds but without knowing the dimensions I can't tell. Where will the roosts go? It doesn't look like there's room for four 5' roosts in there. Where will you put the nest boxes and feeder/water? That also takes up more room. Our coop is 5' x 10' and the nest boxes stick out the side, so they don't take up any room. The feeder hangs but I still consider that it takes up room since they can't really go under it. The water is only in there during the cold weather. We have 12 chickens.

Wonderful pictures of coops!! We have not started building our chickens coop yet because our little ones are somewhere between 5-6 weeks old, they are feathering out at different stages so I am guessing different ages. I keep them in the house in the spare bedroom, when they outgrew the large patio furnature box they were in, this is what we built to house them in until we move them outside. It comes apart easily to move it outside on nice days. The blue is a liner that I take out and clean then put fresh litter down for them on.

What do you guys think? Can I use this - modified - as my permanent outdoor run? I was thinking I'd add a 18" or so hardware cloth skirt and stake that in place to hold it down.. Seems like a neat idea! This thread seems to have a little something for everyone! I love it!!

I really like that idea! I think it would work out just fine.
