The smaller one is the first egg of my mystery chick, Belle. The larger egg is from my Comet, Strawberry -- I think she was already laying when I got her, though she took a little break after being moved to my place.

Here is Belle:

I left the girls for two days to visit family for Independence Day, and when I came home, I had an egg waiting for me! Isn't it gorgeous? These are my first hens and this is my first egg ever!

I was totally expecting Goldie, my Golden Campine to lay the first egg. But since this egg was brown, it had to be Opal, the lovely Australorp or BigFeet my slightly neurotic Golden Laced Wyandotte. Does anyone have any idea if the egg looks more like a australorp egg or a wyandotte egg?

Or to put it another way, which of the girls looks like she just layed an egg?

I really want to know who it was, so any insight would be helpful! The egg was quite large, slightly longer than a store bought and slightly pinkish.....

Wow how cool!!! I've never gotten a 3 yolker before.

Just by comb development I would guess it was your Black Australorp. Maybe you will catch her in the act tomorrow.

thanks for your input, i think it is the australorp too. i hope that the two brown egg layers lay slightly different shades so that i can tell them apart. the golden campine has been doing the hen squat for about a month, and the australorp just started doing the hen squat about a week ago. the wyandotte hasn't squatted for me yet, but she is skittish and doesn't like to be petted.

anyone else want to guess who laid the egg?

woo-hoo! today i got another egg, but i wonder if it is also a first egg, from a different hen than yesterday's egg?

this egg was much smaller and also darker and more of a terra-tint, whereas yesterdays egg was larger and pinkish. here are pictures, the second image shows today's egg next to yesterday's egg shell...
