Our 6 hens are now around 23 weeks. One of the browns has been laying daily for over 2 weeks now.

Cinderella, our smallest BO was the first of our 6 hens to lay the 1st egg. She is our smallest hen and the lowest one in the pecking order (poor girl), so we very surprised that she was the 1st one!!!!

2011/09/17: We had let our girls out to free range earlier in the morning and after breakfast, we went to check the nest boxes (as our kids {and I even more frequently} have been checking every few hours since the nest boxes' completion only two days prior), and when the oldest lifted the lid he said "oh, Hi there, Chicken". I peeked in and Cacciatore was looking at us with her head cocked as if to say "BOK! Hello there! Can I help you?". I told our son to close the lid and give her some privacy. We went back to the porch and I explained to him that "this could be it" as it was very strange that she was inside the coop while it was open for the chickens to free range. We waited for a very long 3 or 4 minutes and heard a cluck and then she appeared at the coop door, hopped out, took a quick couple of sips of water, and then went and joined her sisters.

We excitedly hurried back and opened the nest box to find this! It was still warm

2011/09/18: The very next day (yesterday), two more of our four girls, 'Marsala' and 'With Broccoli', gave us their first eggs! And 'Cacciatore' came through again with a larger one too!
(White store-bought egg in picture for comparison)

Hopefully 'Divan', our fourth girl, will come through today. This is so so very exciting!

Thank you to all the folks here on https://www.backyardchickens.com/ for giving us the knowledge and confidence to be able to raise chickens in our own back yard!
