We have three Rhode Island Reds, and one Cochin bantam. All about the same age, within a week or so. They are all 4 1/2 months old Last week we started getting eggs from two of the reds. There was one double egg the first day. Huge! Now normal size, one each per day from two Reds. None yet from the third, nor the bantam.
Why isn't the third red hen laying? And about the beautiful bantam?

FloridaGal, my bantam cochin hen JUST started laying this week. She's 8 months old and has laid 2 small tinted eggs so far. For a while we thought she was a rooster. She crows and her comb is kinda big for a hen. We gave her brother away in May because of his crowing, so she took over. She's probably not going to lay as much as your reds(apparently they are poor layers, but mine laid her second one the day after the next).

These are my first 3 from my RIR. She's been laying in a dog house. I moved the dog house so she can't use it. The egg on the left is the one I know she laid today.

Piper, our Golden Sex Link laid her first egg today! She is 15 weeks, so we were really surprised when we found her nesting! Her egg is on the left, compared to an egg from our SS hen.

Beautiful eggs and I'm so sorry to see you recently lost one.

Thank you! I don't know for sure the breeds that laid yesterday. I have a thread in "Breed and Gender" trying to find out what I bought, lol. I'm a newbie to chickens, but what he said they are (what he was told when buying them as chicks) doesn't quite match what I've seen on BYC. As long as they lay for me and are happy, I'm happy!

We're so excited! We just got our first eggs today -- one from the Rhode Island Red and the other from the Silver-Laced Wyandotte! We don't know which egg is which (any guesses)? One was in the run (next to the waterer) and the other was tucked up in a nesting box. Both hens are 22 weeks old. We knew they were getting close because over the last week or two they both got larger combs and wattles that turned very red. They've also started squatting a bit and bawking. Our third hen, a speckled sussex, hasn't really shown that change yet, so we're sure it's not her.

This is our first chicken adventure, we got them as 2-day-old chicks this March. Our daughter is now in a poultry 4-H club and is loving it!

I've learned so much from this site and all of the helpful experienced chicken experts!
