Store bought egg on right, our perfect little egg on left.

Our hens are all 16-19 weeks old, but I suspect the egg came from one of our barred rocks. She's more mature than the others, red face, and I caught her singing the egg song yesterday afternoon! Our rooster started crowing last weekend and I caught another hen (our crossbeak BLRW) singing the egg song last night! And someone was singing the egg song as I locked them up tonight. WOOHOO!!!!

I'm so jealous of all your eggs!! Mine are hitting 20 weeks this week, and they're spending it at the fair...crossing my fingers that they don't lay their first ones at the fair! I really want to find it in their coop :3

Got my first egg from on of my 4 brown commercial layers at 16w 6d. The shell was so thin that it ended up getting cracked before I found it. Paper thin. I wasn't expecting any eggs so early, so I had only JUST switched them to lay feed that week and hadn't put out any oyster shell yet. I fed them a mess of turnip greens this morning for the extra calcium the dark greens contain and I'm heading to the feed mill at lunchtime to get some oyster shell.

I switched ours to layer feed (mixed half and half with their grower) a few weeks ago, just because of timing (had run out of the other so my next purchase was of layer pellets, which I just tossed into the food bin and stirred it all up!) They went through that and they're now on a mix of organic layer pellets and Scratch and Peck soy/corn free layer, which is what I'll move them to completely after the pellets are gone.

The shell was perfect and strong, and the hen laid it right in her nest box, next to the little wooden eggs. I'm saving the egg for now, hoping for more to save up for an omelette :)

Just looked at the calendar and looks like the BR who I think laid it is ~ 19 weeks old (got her from the feed store as a little fuzzy butt 18 weeks and 4 days ago, but she was probably several days to a week old at the time.)

This is so exciting!

Woot!!! My silver laced wyandotte hen "Fly Girl" laid her 1st egg at 4 months old...she has laid eggs for three out of 4 consecutive days and is out there cackling again!! :)

I wish I knew what you guys are doing to get your chickens to lay so early. My stars (one red and one black EE) are 22 weeks old and still not laying. The red's face is starting to have some color, but the black doesn't look anywhere near ready.

Yesterday, found my first ever pullet egg.
Today a second one.
Not sure, but I think Goldie and Red are the culprits.

The far right is one from the old hens, laid last month.
center is the one from yesterday, and left from today.
Regular golf ball to compare to.

Roo the rooster, who does what he was hired , er raised for.
he protects the pullets from the old hens, and chases all the girls at times.
And he started crowing last month.
Still needs a tune up though, LOL

Anyway, I can now start having eggs again, though these will take more than the ones I was getting before, at least till they get to laying full sized eggs.
I candled both. Look clear, and they fee;l about right weight wise.
I used to, once in a while, get an egg or two that was about the size of maybe a pigeons egg.
With 4 good pullets now, i should have enough to give a few away
and maybe raise more pullets next year.
be interesting to see what comes out of those eggs...
