My newbies have started laying! At least one of them anyways. Does anyone have any guesses as to who is laying the dark eggs? I thought it may be my BO but they are super dark like some of my Marans eggs, is that normal? I have 2 Marans that started laying in July and stopped in September, 1 BO and 2 Cochins.

We have had our first chickens for three weeks now (1 Barred Rock, 2 Easter Eggers), we then found a few more hens from some of our aquantinces here in Tucson, and we brought home a black star, what I believe to be a Langshans, a silkie, and what I think based on the coloring of this hen a Barnevelder yesterday. After waiting for an egg and thinking we will just have to wait until spring for the three we have had for a few weeks, I got a surprise text message. My 6 year old daughter came home from school and just had to see the chickens, when she got to the coop she found this tiny egg. My wife said the silkie we just got yesterday was acting broody in the coop, making what looked like a nest. This little gem I believe may be from the silkie, but it is still our First Egg!!! Hope to see many more from our other hens soon!

First Egg 12/4/12 I believe it is from our Silkie.

Got four eight week old Potch Koekoeks (local breed which look like BR) about 4 months ago. Yesterday I heard one of them making strange sounds and thanks to the info available on this forum, because this is all new to me, I suspected that the arrival of an egg was imminent. This morning when I went to let them out I thought "check the egg laying box, you never know" and there they were. Exciting, very small but very exciting.

My BO's lay a light tan egg. I would guess that one of your Marans started laying again.

I thought Marans laid dark eggs? The three darker ones are lighter than the egg my Black Australorp lays. I would call it a medium dark brown (bottom middle):

But they look bigger in a small hand

Everybody's first eggs, with a store egg to compare! :) I didn't know this fun thread existed when they first happened or I would have posted right away, this was a few months ago. :) Glad to know we are all so excited when they start to lay, LOL!

When Pearl was finished with her young-uns and started laying, we found this clutch in the dog house on our back patio! She now lays in the coop in our version of a nesting box...a new lidded cat litter box!

Our older hens stopped laying about a month or more ago - we do not use supplemental light... but let me tell ya, I have been thinking about it hard and heavy after having to buy eggs in the store!

Anyway, our young hens just turned 23 weeks - we hadn't even been checking for eggs but every 2 or 3 days "just in case". I figured that the young hens probably wouldn't start laying until spring if we didnt add a light. We have a VERY mixed flock.

Today, after not checking for 2 or 3 days, my son came out of the chicken house with a HUGE grin on his face! One of the (two) Leghorns have started to lay! Well, she actually must have started at least a day ago, cause we found two little white eggs!

Our daughter and son with our first eggs from our new little hens!
