Our first eggs have been large and brown but weird...
Different shell thickness and surfaces. Our youngest hen lays tiny, tiny brown eggs (not shown).

Not sure what to do about those dents and weird surfaces; help??

He GAChickeeper!

You have the same counter top as I do! White with gray pattern... it has been in our house since we bought it 16 years ago... don't know how old it is, but it's pretty old, but seems to be holding up very well!

Look at my first eggs in earlier post below...

Our First in 25 Years!

Well our first TWO. We didn't look in the nesting boxes the day before....
DH with so much pride you'd think he layed them himself!

We were amazed by the size of their first offerings too!

We have 2 RIRs that are 30 weeks old. Our other chicks are 16 weeks old. We've been dealing with a sickness in the flock and were expecting a long delay in egg production. Finding these 2 eggs was like a ray of hope at the end of a very long dark tunnel.
A BIG THANKS! to gumpsgirl for her encouragement and support during these past few months.

Thats why you have to offer GRIT to your hens ... Just put out a bowl next to their food and they eat whenever . Will improve the texture of the egg shells . Grit will toughen the shells and I have never found any broken neither .

This (the little egg) is what I think is our first Welsummer egg. Compared to one of our white eggs and a Red Star egg:

Nice color! I noticed that one of my two EE pullets let the rooster mount her today. I'm hoping that means she'll lay her first in the next few days. I made that prediction after seeing similar behavior with three other pullets this summer?autumn and was right. Crossing fingers!!!!

HENRIETTA23

Henrietta 23, I have a game hen that lays significantly smaller, brown eggs, like the one you have shown.

She is a more stream-lined hen with little or not pea comb; no visible flesh anywhere on her head! She is the only one molting at this time (October) and has stopped laying.

I don't actually know what she is, but was told she's a Buckeye. My other two hens look like normal hens, you know; square or "u" shaped, but i don't know what they are either!

All 3 are pretty small compared to ones I've seen at the county fair, but they've all been laying since I got 'em, except the game bird who has been molting.

I've had 'em all 3 since April'08. They were for my birthday!

I haven't had another that small. I think that the welsummer is laying normal sized eggs now. Not sure if they're as dark as some might expect.
