ok this it the second time I have found this. Not all of my hens are laying yet, this my be a first egg fluke. I found this morning a non-shelled egg. It had a paper thin looking like trying to form paper cover on 1/2. It looked like it didn't have anything on the other 1/2. KIND OF LIKE THIS PHOTO I FOUND Just broken
I scooped it out of the wood shavings and put it in the trash. I had one 2 weeks ago. I have 4 Australorps and 9 Buff Orphington. I went and got oyster shell after I found the first one. I have them on Scratch- N- Peck Layer. They get garden greens every other day. 2 of the Australorps and one Buff have been laying. The Austra's are now 23 weeks and the Buffs are 20. I think it is a Buff Orphington new to laying. So any thoughts ???
I got some of these myself when the girls started laying. In fact, these were both from the same chicken, and were just a few hours apart.....I know it was the same hen because it was when they were out for foraging time and I physically saw her struggle to lay them and saw them come out of her. That was Beatrice....and I got 2 more from her over the next couple of days. I had posted this on another forum to ask if she should be culled because she was struggling so much.
:
I didn't cull her - and this is what she's giving me now:
That egg was NOT a double yoker, and it weighed a very respectable 78 grams. So relax - your girl is just trying to sync her entire, complicated system and they generally get past that "rubber egg" stage, although getting them anytime even after they've been laying for awhile isn't unusual.
Good to hear, I was thinking this was the case. I did get, after the no shell egg, 2 eggs from 2 of the Buffs one was 1.75oz and one 2.1oz and one this afternoon from one of the Australorps it was also 1.75oz.
The day has COME! Our first and second eggs- got RSL, production reds, and australorps. The RSL and production reds are right at 18 weeks old- found the first egg this morning, and the second one this afternoon (guessing we missed the first one yesterday- got back late). First is 28 grams and second is 36 grams (both still peewee sized, but looking like the first layer is getting into gear! Cant wait for my wife to get home so we can crack em open and see how pretty the yolks are! Been supplementing their feed with paprika for extra dark, vibrant yolks, and they free range a few hours each day, too! You can see the size comparison with them next to store bought large eggs. Hopefully, we won't be buying eggs any longer real soon!
