have gotten three eggs total since the first one saturday. one was a double yoker, yay! sure can see the difference between my eggs and store bought ones. they tasted A LOT better too!!

Our 21 week old Cream Crested Legbar laid this today, our very first one!

Sidenote: I started following this community last night when one of my chickens didn't return home. (We let them free range during the day.) Being my first missing chicken, I was a total wreck. Thankfully she returned the next morning and was casually waiting to be let into the run. What is the likelihood that she also laid this egg and was freaked out about her changes?

First egg from one of my Barred rock ladies! It is so little compared with the store bought one! Concerned because it was in the dirt bath area of the run, not in the nesting box. Not sure how to train them to do it in the nesting box. Suggestions?

Put some fake eggs in the nesting box! You can get them at Tractor Supply or just use those plastic easter eggs.

We got our first egg this morning! From our red sex link, who's 17 weeks old. Its a very cute and little egg. :)

She laid it in the nesting box right next to the fake egg! Fake one is on the left, real one is on the right:

Our ladies are 19 weeks and 3 days old. Someone has laid this lovely egg and we have no idea which one. Professor Layton aka my daughter says it's the Wyandotte due to the feather colors. I'm unbelievably excited like I really did something

and they truly did all of the beautiful work. This evening we installed the dividers into their nesting boxes which we had closed off for the last 4 months. They were so disturbed by the unexpected space there were chicken RAWRRRRRRRKS all around. Question, we placed the egg in a nesting box so they'd get a clue what those were for. Does this sound like we're on the right track or should I go out and grab the egg tonight?

They should instinctively lay in the nesting boxes. If you find eggs other places, you can try putting fake eggs in the nesting box to give them the right idea. Apparently even plastic Easter eggs will do. I have a lady who lays in the nesting box sometimes and sometimes next to it. She's the youngest though and the bottom of the pecking order, so my guess is that our bossy beak top of the pecking order won't let her use the box, so she lays where she can.

After months of waiting our girls finally started laying yesterday. We have 2 buff orpingtons, a LF Cochin, a Black sex link, a silkie and a frizzle. Don't think frizzle is laying or even if it's a hen yet. But after seeing signs of being close to laying time we found the first egg sitting in doorway of their house. I went back to look more closely after running inside and taking a picture of the first egg. Found 4 more beautiful eggs laying in a pile in the very back corner of the house. Not in the best box we gave them but next to it. So we are very happy but also surprised to go from zero eggs to 5 in one day. When one hen starts laying does it sometimes trigger the other hens that are close to laying to start aw s well? That seems like what has happened with our girls. They all started on same day. Unless it's possible for one to lay a couple eggs at a time? I know there were no eggs in there when I put them to bed the night before because I had cleaned the pen and house out and put fresh straw in. This is around the time they layed yesterday so I'm watching closely to try to see who is laying. Whoever it may be we are SOOOOO HAPPY!!!!!!!!!
