I have one or two girls laying ... I think two the eggs I get are a little different in color. They've been laying for a couple weeks. At first in the nest boxes ( I hadn't even thought to put golf balls in there yet) then two days in a row an egg was laid just inside the coop door. So I put golf balls in the nest boxes. Now two days in a row I've found they've managed to some how get the balls out of the nest boxes that are ground level make a nest out of the pine on the coop floor and lay the egg with the golf balls they moved ?! How can I get them to stop doing this? So weird.
Everyone has been so helpful. I have another egg laying question. I got 4 new hens a week and a half ago. 3 Ten month old hens and one about 18 months old. All 4 were established egg layers at their previous home. I was warned that the stress of a new coop and flock may stop egg laying for a few days, but one of the hens laid an egg the very next day after I got her and has laid one every day since except for 2 days.
The other three have not laid any eggs. Now we have had some of the coldest weather in the area this season over the past week, and it's just now starting to warm up again. Would the cold also deter them from laying? One is an EE, one is a BCM, and the other is a EE/BCM cross. Any ideas?
As soon as the weather warmed up, the 18 month old EE finally laid an egg. So now two of the four are laying. I hope it's contagious.
Can't post the photo for some reason.
You should move your nest box's oof the ground about 18 inch's, they may have a complex about being boxed in on the ground, where as they may feel more secure off the ground, mine are about 40 inchs off the gound and mine only lay on the ground if all the box's are occupied, i have about 3 hens that will use them to take naps in, so sometimes the others just cant wait and they will lay on the ground uder the box's. Or drop their egg under the roosts at night, never used golf balls or other means, just the chickens natural curiosity.I have one or two girls laying ... I'm so pleased one of my polish has laid two eggs over the last three days. Was not expecting any laying to begin untill spring with the shorter days now upon us. This is extra special for me as I incubated and reared them myself. Just so happy to have my first eggs. They seem very small compared to my Amber ladies eggs too cute and small to eat I think!!
