The wait is finally over! Amelia my Brown leghorn finally laid an egg at 28w old! This is my first flock so she just gave me my first ever fresh egg. I'm still in shock. Literally the day I gave up on them ever laying an egg I got one. Only 9 more to go!

Egg on the left is store bought. Amelias is on the right. Tiny and perfect in every way.

Congratulations! It's nerve wracking. I have my first flock too. I was told that my hens would start laying around 16-20 weeks old, and the first one finally laid an egg at 26 weeks. The second one has yet to lay an egg at 27 weeks.

So I went to put the girls to bed and make sure the water wasn't frozen (and the girls) since it sat around -25 C today...and loooky here what I found! The egg is frozen with a small hairline crack but the shell itself seems formed OK. Now here's the odd thing..the girls are about 13 weeks old so this is a surprise, however there are 3 of the 11 that appear more 'grown up' than the others, so maybe we will be having more of these surprises.

Congrats on your egg!

I have to check a few times a day to make sure my eggs are not frozen. I know some will not agree, but I have eaten some of them even with the hairline crack.

I judge each egg to determine if it is clean and safe enough to eat. If the egg is the only one in the nest and the crack is on the top, the egg is clean, the crack is just a hairline I fry it immediately.

I do run it under water to remove the thin layer of egg at the crack.

I figure it came out whole, no bird has sat on it and the crack has only been exposed to air.

If the cracked egg is surrounded by other eggs I throw it to the turkeys to eat. I figure it got sat on and could have nasty germs.......

Grats on the egg! May the next one not freeze... BTW I had 2 frozen eggs yesterday, sigh,,,

My first egg came from an EE almost 27 weeks, my second EE just laid her first egg at almost 30 weeks, and I have a third EE not laying yet. I think it doesn't help that November was more like January around here!

FINALLY !!! My oldest girls are 29 1/2 weeks old.
This is my first flock and I've eagerly been awaiting an egg. Well, Friday one of my Red Sex Links gave me my first egg. It weighed 2 oz and is perfect. Since then, she laid one more egg on Sunday and a third this morning.

I'm so excited to have them but at the same time they seem almost too precious to eat. I feel like they should be displayed! Is that weird???

NO! We just got our first egg yesterday and I don't want to eat it either. I was just telling my husband it's like a trophy to me rewarding me for all my hard work. I was thinking about blowing it out and making it a Christmas ornament. My husband doesn't get it.

I waited almost 2 weeks before cracking open my first egg. When I did crack it open, I studied it (color of shell inside, strength of the membrane, shell thickness, the perfect little air cell)! Then I cracked it open next to a store bought egg and continued my analysis. I became an instant egg nerd. It took a lot to muster the courage to open my first egg ever! I have collected 13 eggs in 3 weeks and I still marvel at every one.

KNelly - LOVE the ornament idea! I may just have to copy that.

Sunflower4you - Thanks for the validation! Nice to know I'm not the only crazy one!
