This may sound kind of silly to some, but, I actually think the "egg song" is kind of cute. I have 5 girls that will be 6 months old the end of this month. I have Raven and Simone, both I was told are Marans but they lay olive green eggs (one is lighter than the other), I have Astro, looks like a bantam (we were told by a feed store employee she was a rooster, thus the name) and who was somehow left behind outside our bedroom window where she hatched and we found her. She lays a light peach egg. There is Penny who is white with brown and gray feathers on her head. We bought her from the feed store to keep Astro company. I was told she is Americauna. She is probably the one laying light bluish eggs. And then there is Marsha who looks a lot like Astro, but I got her from the same lady I got Raven and Simone from. The lady took her little egg in and put it on a heating pad. Marsha hatched inside a little cat carrier. She is the one that I am not sure is laying eggs yet.

LOVE the egg song. One of my SS Hamburg girls is absolutely crazy when she sings her eggs song, it's fantastic! I'll have to record it one of these days, it's a hoot!

duluthralphie, I have one that "growls" too when she needs to lay an egg. I thought it was hilarious. They are funny in their own way and can be quite amusing. We like to sit inside the coop with them and just watch them. One likes to jump up on my lap and "tell me about the day" or "tattle"! I would ask her if everyone was being good. I enjoy them a lot but it's nice to know others have "growling" hens too. I like to pet them too so that they know I love them, especially the ones I had to put medicine on from being pecked.

Here is the first egg from our red star RED. She layer it a week ago (or so) today. Cool that it was a double yolk! She has layered one everyday since except for one day.

a couple questions:

1. Do your hens sound off every time the lay an egg? She is so loud before and after. Since she started one of the other red stars has too. Now she is just as loud and they scream together for a little while.

2. How can i get Goldie out of the bucket and into the nesting box??? She is crazy and can't want until i bring out the bucket for her.

Some of my chickens were very loud to start with, others have been nearly silent. I think it depends on the chicken. It is like removing eggs from under the birds, some do not mind, some growl and protest and some peck at me.
