My freeloading black australorp, Steve, finally laid her first egg yesterday at 33 weeks of age! Sheesh! It is our first brown egg; our other laying hen gives us small cream colored ones. Yay!
Oh my. Thanks for indulging me. What an exciting day it is. The sky is blue, the air is crisp and my beau found a blue-green egg where the girls like to hop inside a half-whiskey barrel. One of the three Easter Eggers is the culprit. The girls are 25 weeks old. I suspect it was either Fig or Fern, as Piccadilly is still a bit smaller and her comb is not as red and is smaller too. Here is the egg and the Easter Eggers:
Fig: The sweetest and friendliest of the girls.
Fern: Here she is before her comb and face reddened. She's a friendly girl and pretty too.

yay! Now....count how many times you go out to check the nesting boxes in the next two weeks. It is so much fun, huh? Love those first eggs!
