I've been reading this thread and reading and reading...and just being totally green with envy! Well today I finally get to post. One of my 18 week olds (they'll be 19 weeks on Tuesday...12 August08) ...a Golden Comet, I think it was Rosemary, laid this beautifully perfect tiny egg yesterday. (It's the little brown speckled egg, next to a store egg) I think it's Rosemary because she's the one who's been squatting the most/longest and has been the main one interested in the nest boxes.
Here's Rosemary checking out one of the marble nest eggs I have in the nest boxes. Of course when it came time to actually lay an egg, she did it on the floor!
We probably won't eat our first egg because I had just started switching the pullets from medicated chick feed to layer feed a few days ago and they were still on a small partial ration of the chick feed just before she laid this. As of today, they are on full layer feed, so hopefully any eggs after today we should be okay eating!
I'll blow this egg out and paint a picture on it. Here's an example of what I do with empty egg shells. I got a blue ribbon for this one at our county fair this year.
