Here is my first, (the little brown one). This was not even a week ago and we have gotten 1 a day since. (Can't wait for the rest of them to start laying too!)

You mean you had NO idea she was laying and discovered this hidden nest ? yipppee

Yes, that's right, I had NO idea she was laying, as from time to time over the past few weeks I'd looked far and wide for a nest around and outside the garden. Clearly I didn't look thoroughly enough. My thoughts were more along the lines of wondering how it could be that her sisters had both started laying and she hadn't.

That is too funny! She sure was planning on a big family, wasn't she? gig

Were any of the eggs edible?

Yes, it's really funny from several points of view - her intentions, my failure to find the nest earlier, my thoughts, etc. It does indeed look like she was planning a very big family.
I cooked two of the eggs today; and they were perfect. I shone a bright light through a few more, and they looked good too as far as I could tell from that and from having browsed through egg-candling pictures at http://shilala.homestead.com/candling.html . I'll look at more of them tomorrow with a better light.

My Australorp started at exactily 5 Months old. after her 4th egg, the eggs got big. My second Australorp is trying to lay but hers doesn't have shells yet.

Good to hear that. My 5 month old Australorp laid her 3rd egg today. It was the same size as the other two, a good size medium. I'll let you know if her 5th egg gets bigger. So far she is laying every other day so it might be a few days before I report back.

Well, Betty laid her 4th egg today

and it was the same size as her first 3 -- like the one on the left in pic beside a store bought large egg. I'd consider hers a big medium at this point.

So, that makes it the first time she has laid in two consecutive days. It'll be interesting to see if her 5th egg is bigger and if she continues to lay every day from here on.

I can't wait to see what my two little bantams' eggs are going to look like. They're about a week younger than Betty and haven't started laying yet.

Congrats to everyone else who is starting to get those eggs now!

Oh Oh .... I have 8 nesting boxes and 1/2 filled with pine shavings and shavings thru out the coop , BUT this morning , I found 1 small egg in the middle of the coop floor ....

This worries me . I don't want any of them laying on the floor . Eggs will get broken and if they start eating broken eggs and shells , scared that will continue .

Any suggestions . I know its one of a new one and 1st. egg . Don't know which , I have about 40 of them that should start laying at any given time . LOL

Hoping they learn from the older hens and use the nesting boxes .....
