potbelly pigs and chickens

I'm just wondering if a potbelly pig and chickens could share a house. Seperate rooms but one building. My MIL told me that the chickens would give the pig a lice and that they can't live together. I don't really now wether to believe her or not. I've also heard that the pig will eat the chickens. So different "rooms" sounds like a good idea but mil doesn't think they can even be in the same building.

I personally have never had a pig, but I have certainly seen pigs and chickens sharing barnyards and they seem to be healthy.
Many species can cross-contaminate each other with parasites, but a well-organized regimen can take care of that.
As for your chickens giving the pigs lice, your chickens shouldn't have lice either and would need to be treated!

Pigs will eat chickens. My chickens are free range and sometimes get in with our potbelly pigs - to pick up spilt feed. No problems to report at this time from them.

Just a thought, pot belly pigs will eat ALL of your chicken food in a minute! My friend had to lock her pig up separately. Good luck!

we have both pot belly pigs and feeder hogs. Our chickens have a chicken coop, and the pigs (both kinds) have there own pens. They all have access to outside pens 24/7. we have our birds free range too. I have some chickens that sleep right in with the pot bellys. Others come and go as they please. I have never had a problem with this. And none of the pigs (feeder hogs or pot bellys) have ever went after a chicken. They will even eat and drink outta the same dishes....

thanks for all the info. I don't have chickens or a pig yet, but I want to make sure I know all I can before hand. I thought my mil was wrong about the parasites. If everything is clean and healthy you shouldn't have those problems right. So next question, do I have to room the pig and chickens seperatly. or can they share a coop as long as the chicken feed is out of pig reach.

I would still room the pig seperately. They can eat chickens, and if you have them together you could just be asking for trouble!

My PBP has a few hens that like to 'hang out' with him, but they can get out of his 'pen' if they need to. Mine will also be 'housed' in the same building, and use the same run as the chickens, but he won't have access to their feed or sleeping quarters.

And yes, if everyone is clean and healthy, their shouldn't be any parasite problems.
