Potential problem-- neighbor's yappy dog

Dachshunds were originally bred for killing varmints like rats and gophers...I think they have it in their blood to want to kill little things. That sonic emitter sounds like a great idea- and at least worth a try- and I wouldn't about the barking bothering your chickens. I think they would only be bothered if the dog tries to get in the coop=) Good luck to you!

We too have had our share of yappy neighbor dogs. The first was a chihuahua that came to live next door as a puppy. I made a point of making friends with her through the fence, talked to her and gave her treats, so she was great with me. Even so, her clueless owners didn't hear when she would bark all night. So I left my hose armed outside the back door, and when she would start I would go out, give her warning ("hush Princess") and if she didn't shut up I would strafe the yard with artificial rain. It worked like a charm - got so I could just say hush, and eventually all I had to do was open the back door. I never aimed the hose directly at her, and all it took was a few seconds of "rain" to get the message across. I've used the same technique on the little mix behind our chicken coop (there's a block wall between us) and with the same result. All it takes now is "hush Rosie" and she high-tails it into their house! The key is discretion - you don't want the neighbors thinking you're purposely hazing their dog so I wouldn't recommend aiming right at it, or purposely soaking it. Just a few pennies from heaven should work, and you can always claim you lost control while watering your yard if you hit the owners by mistake!

Heh. I'll see your daschund and raise you one daschund/Jack Russell cross! My Poppy, a rescue dog, can't help wanting to kill my 4 1/2 week old ducklings. Luckily they're in a cage right now that has a good hardware cloth floor but I have to be really careful.

She doesn't chase the chickens because the first time she tried they ganged up on her and once she got away from them she ran into the house and hid under the bed.
No problem with the adult ducks either. She and the drake have a chasing game they do when he tries to mount a hen or when she gets too close to one of his girls. Sooner or later one of them gets bored and the game is over.

But she's watched these duckies grow from little peepers that she couldn't even see to gangly teengers who run and splash. I'm sure it's the quick movements that fascinate her and make her preying instinct kick in.
Oh yes, of course she digs as well.
It's strange but when I convince her to come in she almost looks relieved. Settles down in her favourite chair and relaxes as if to thank me for getting her away from them.
It's hard to get her to come away from them because she's so wired and tense when she's out there. And I can't just pick her up due to her rescue reason. She was a biter. Not any more under normal situations but she has tried to bite lately when she's on guard.

Well, my PetSafe Outdoor Ultrasonic Bark Deterrent arrived in the mail today, and I popped a battery into it and went outside to post it. We'll see what happens. Apparently it can take up to two weeks for a consistent effect?

I'm a bit worried that the fence will prevent it from working as well as it could....

hey let us know how it works!

wonder if it would work on the crazy red neck neighbor who randomly shoots his gun off..... grrrrr.....

good luck!

I wouldnt worry about it very much. If the chicks grow up hearing the dogs it wont be any big deal to them..my dogs yap all the time and my birds dont care at all...

Now my dogs do bark, but when they are suppose to. They is when someone or something is coming onto the property. It may be a predator or just a visitor. My son has your problem a neighbor's barking dog. They would just laugh at him when he would talk to them about the dog. This dog love to bark from 1 A M to 6 A M. My grandson found the cure. He taped the dog barking then hooked it up to one of his amps. One he uses in the band he plays in. Well the barking started and he turned on the taped. People 2 blocks away were calling the police about the barking. After a few nights of this the owner got rid of the dog. I think the fine he had to pay was the cause of the dog leaving. No one ever bother to figure out it was a tape of the dog.

Quite creative! Wish the owner could have solved the problem without getting rid of the dog, but you have to do what needs to be done.

I think I'd meet the neighbors sooner than later.. they may be cool... maybe not, would be nice to know who you're dealing with. Too many people nowadays, for whatever reason, forget how valuable a good relationship with your neighbors can be, from security, to friendship, to settling differences like friends vs. strangers. Can't go wrong extending the olive branch while you feel out the situation.
