Potting soil to play in?

Is it ok to give plain organic potting soil to “play” in? Their run is all mulch with a tiny box of sand that they can barely fit into now. But they are let into the yard for most of the day where they like to dig holes and play in the dirt. They will be locked into their run for a few days at a time throughout summer, though. Thinking of adding a bag of soil in there. Thanks.

As long as it's organic. The other kind usually has fertilizer and other things that aren't good for chickens. They could get sick if they eat it because they like to peck around in dirt

I would get top soil for them to dust bathe in.
Potting soil often contains pearlite and vermiculite which I am not sure they should have available.

Mine love peat moss.

I agree with top soil or peat moss as being better options. Even organic "potting soil" will contain fertilizer or other add ins, just organic instead of conventional.

And if you have a white chicken, she won’t be for long, as soon as she takes her bath in the potting soil. She’ll still look cute, but she’ll be off-white, beige, light brown in different places.
