Potty Training Chickens, How-to!

I have a friend that has several house trained chickens and 1 duck. They don't stay in all of the time but they all get in the house visitation. She takes them to schools and nursing homes to visit. During their outings they wear chicken diapers just in case.

No kidding.

I was at the feed store last month. This lady is buying a small bag of crumbles and a small bag of scratch.

I'm curious so I ask, what kind of animal are you buying that for?

She says, our pet chicken.

I ask, "You mean, you only have one?"

Yes.

"And you keep her alone in a coop all by herself?"

No.. she has the run of the house.

Then I about lose it.

"So where does she poop?"

In a corner of our kitchen on the tile where it's real easy to clean up.

"Does she ever poop any where else?"

Sometimes in her 'nest box' where she sleeps with our dog, but that's easy to clean there too. I just clean it out when I pick up her egg to wash and put in the fridge.

"So how did you get her to just poop in a corner of the kitchen?"

I don't know, she just does. We got her as a chick and she's never left the house

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++==

At this point I was thinking I was living in a version of the Twilight Zone.

It can happen.

Wow! Thanks so much this is great information!

I have a cockatiel that will go potty on command. We taught it to go on a piece of paper. We put him there and say go potty. He always does or at least tries to. We got a second cockatiel and his first words were "go potty"!

Training chickens is very similliar , instead of the "Go Potty" command you use a simpler command such as a whistle or click.

The only chicken in my house is in 1 of 2 places...

I hope so!! No house chickens for me thank you very much. I "love" my chickens, but I doubt that they've got enough brain power to be housetrained!!

Indeed, I am not kidding, Chickens as other animal's are creature's of habit, and can be taught many exercises such as this one.

I didn't think they had the ability to control when they pooped. Thus the reason that people use chicken diapers. Personally for me no chickens in the house unless they are chicks I am brooding in the basement.
