Carefully pluck all feathers from wound edges. Pluck about 1/4" from edge. When plucking, pluck in direction of feather growth to avoid further tearing of skin.
You have horses? I'd so, have you ever watched a vet clean and debride a wound? Initial cleaning is key. Wounds should be irrigated with sterile water and a proper antiseptic. What antibiotics do you have?
