Poultry Breeds of Spanish Ancestry

Hello all,

I am just tagging in as I have my first White Face Black Spanish banty eggs in the bator!! One day down, 20 to go. I hate waiting. I can't wait to watch the fluffy butts pop!

Hi there and welcome.

Congratulations on those eggs. I sure hope they all hatch for you. Please be sure and share pictures of them as they grow.

Ron,

I've got eggs pipping today and I just discovered something quite unsettling...

One egg pipped sometime (I don't know when) but I just discovered a pool of blood underneath the egg. I candled it and I think it's probably dead. Another egg was pipped and there was blood running down the side of the egg and somewhat dried but the chick is still alive and peeping.

Can you tell me what would cause this? I've been hatching and raising these birds for 10 years and I've never seen anything like this.

It pipped into a vein. Make sure the blood does not block the air way. They can lose a lot of blood but hopefully this one will be fine.

It happens more often with shipped eggs.

I'm afraid something is going on. There are 3 eggs that are bloody now. Also, one chick was all dried off and fluffy and I put it in the broody and it wasn't long til I heard pretty shrill peeping. Upon investigation, I find a chick lying in its own blood in the brooder. It was bleeding out through its navel. I scooped it up and got the flow stopped but it lost a lot of blood. It is back in the incubator in a basket by itself. It is still alive but I don't have a lot of hope for it.

I have never had bleeders before. Now I have 3 or more eggs that have bled and a chick that has spontaneously bled (almost) out. I don't like this and I don't think its a coincidence. I have no idea what may have caused this.

eta: could the humidity in my hatcher be too high? Its at 44% right now. It was a bit higher, I think 50% but I adjusted it to go lower. I'm thinking I'll float something in there to get it lower still.

Any thoughts?

eta more: It's two hours later and that chick is still alive! I can't believe it. I thought sure it would die within 10 minutes or so.

Sorry, I am not experienced enough with hatching to help. Hope you figure out the issue.:hugs

Are they your eggs or shipped.

Check to see if Nevada has a free necropsy service for you. I am leaning towards a bacterial infection now.

the only symptom is bleeding?

The hatch problem analysis has two possibilities:

Thank you Puddin Fluff and Ron. They are my own eggs. The chick's navel seemed fine when I put it in there. I check to be sure on each chick. It wasn't a large mushy chick so I don't think omphalitis. I just don't know. That chick, this morning, is fine. I put it back in the brooder with the others but I'll be watching it. I sanitized my hatcher before putting eggs in it. I don't hatch in my incubator. I'm pretty amazed at the survivability of that chick. Yesterday it was unconscious when I pulled it out of the brooder.

I did have a lot of trouble controlling temperatures this time around. It would go high and then low but it was exceedingly difficult to keep on the mark. I'm glad I'm almost done. I've got 8 eggs left that are incubating for a final hatch. They are due in about ten days now.

After that, I think I'll toss this darn incubator as I can't get a replacement controller for it. It has given me more trouble! Not being able to trust it to maintain temps is pretty stressful. Hopefully over the remainder of the summer I can get a better one.

It is a good time to get a good used incubator from Craigs list.

One thing to do would be to give the Breeder Flock a twice weekly dose of a good vitamin in the water. It could have been a vitamin A or K deficiency. The heat may be washing the vitamins out of them with all of the water they will drink in the heat.

That is one problem with living with Hades temperatures
