Poultry Breeds of Spanish Ancestry

I have some new pictures!

Pita Pinta Cockerels, AKA chicken dinner

Partridge Penedesenca pullet

And a lovely dinner they are too! Do you have pics of the ones you'll be keeping?
Ron, do the penedesenca pullet/hens have the king's comb too?

I never got them :-(
We also ordered other breeds, 2 of which had poor hatch ability this year, so we didn't get any.
Man! That stinks! You ordered hatching eggs? Are you still interested in locating some WFBS? We could probably find you some if you are... hopefully.

I may be keeping one of them but will continue to use their sire next season. His offspring are very nice and have a lot more white in them. After the next season, I will swap eggs with petrock since we are both working on the Spanish standard as we understand it. I already have a lot of nice things going with these, shape, leg color and nice combs.

Yes, the P Pene hens have the king's comb but not as pronounced as the males. The P Penes have nice color, tail angle, correct feet. They look like winners so far.

I am thinking I will get some PP eggs from you Ron. When do you think you will have some available? I need to improve on what I have and that will probably be the quickest way to do so. My pullets are still not done growing but I'm wondering if they are going to "make the grade".

And, I'll also need to add some Crele's too, but, I'll do that after the PP's. unless, Crele eggs are available prior to the PP's. Sheesh.... So, Jason, same question.

mine are just coming out of a molt and are starting to pick up but are not laying a ton quite yet. I can see what I can pull together though if you like in the next 3 days just not sure how many that will be.

I am not in a rush to set eggs right this minute. I'd like to get them when chances of being fertile is good, so let me know when would be the best time. The crele looking hen is developing into a nice hen. She should start laying soon.... 6 months old in a couple of weeks.

I received a lovely gift this morning... the first egg from one of the two PP/BCM crosses. (I sold the rest of that hatch but have two more growing out.) I unsuccessfully tried to scan it but it wouldn't work so I'll have to take a photo instead. It isn't as dark an egg as I thought it might be, but hey, it is a egg... just about 6 months to the day after hatching.

The two hens are interesting. One is almost all black with a minimum of color on her neck, thinner built, and more skittish. The other, I have started calling fluffy... which pertains to her bottom end. She is fairly black but with more partridge coloring, appears to have more bulk (fluffy feathers?), and is a more trusting sole. When I turn them out to graze, Fluffy will work the dirt right in front of the dog kennel with two Jack Russells working the fence line, barking and running. The other one stays a goodly distance from the dogs. They are so different, yet so similar.

They both have grey legs, white earlobes, and you can see the Penedesenca in their combs, though one has a taller comb, and the other has a shorter one.

I'll post an egg photo as soon as I can for color. I might need to charge the battery.

Okay... here it is. Looking forward to many more... though I would prefer they were from the new ALL PP's. It is "pullet" sized.
Congratulations on the new egg layer!

She might start laying darker eggs. Her color jets may not have fired up completely yet.

Hi Spanish Breed Chicken fanciers,
I just joined BYC today, although I have been lurking for a while. I love all Large Fowl Heritage Breeds, but am mighty interested in the Marraduna Basque and the Pita Pintas.
I am not a breeder, but I want a good looking flock of whatever breed I decide on and as close to the standard as is viable at this time. I have never incubated and hatched eggs, preferring to purchase 6-16 weeks old.

Right now I have 2 Marraduna pullets purchased from Worth-It Farms in GA They are not to standard in color, except one has beautiful yellow legs.

I first came across the Marraduna Basque on the Euskal Oiloa Basque thread on BYC started by Skyline Poultry in Old Fort, TN. Old Fort is not too far from me, but I can't get in touch with them.

All of the sites at BYC have been extremely helpful and interesting to visit.
