Poultry Breeds of Spanish Ancestry

I'm really needing to find more Empordanesa as unloading my flock was a mistake

what i have is a good hen. 3 roosters though all with faults.
My best rooster has white legs ( should be yellow) he has good form and a good comb.
my best with yellow legs has no appendix on his comb.

i may put one in with my 2 partridge penedesenca hens since i have no rooster to see what i get with him. or i may put my partridge in a separate run with a extra crele rooster and my crele olive eggers to work on fresh crele

Use your cock with the white legs over your hen. The white will be dominate over the yellow, but he will likely be carrying yellow. A percentage of the offspring will have yellow legs. Hatch what you can to secure a few replacements for the cock that you have. Keep as many reasonable pullets that you can. You can work your way out of the hole.

The good thing about recessive vs. dominant in your case is that dominant traits are easy to breed out. Recessive traits require more effort, and test mating for carriers.

Ron will say that not all white legs is dominant. I suspect that he is right. However, in my limited experience with it (I do not like white legs), it has always been dominant. The experience of some (that have more than me in my area) has been the same. So I will say that what was typed above is most likely true. That is most common anyways result. It could be possible that your experience will be different. It would be interesting to me if I was told otherwise. Regardless, the white legs can be bred out. These birds are the sum of their parts. They cannot possibly be condemned on a single characteristic in your circumstance. You have to use what you have to work your way out of a hole.

Please share your experience. If you decide to do this, let me know. I find these types of efforts most interesting. I did not have much of a better start with my Catalanas, but I am making progress.

Do you know of any others in the States?

Yes, go for type first.

Leg color is not hard to fix. I have done it a couple of times--Pita Pinta and Basque hen.

There are not many Empordanesa but there are some. I'm going to try and secure eggs in the spring . My incubator is down waiting for a part still. I'm hoping to start work on the Empordanesa project this Spring. I'm going to cut 2 of my large runs into 4 smaller ones with less bird capability per run so I can set up more breeders . I'm probably limited to this for now till I can talk my wife into 2 more large runs

It sounds like a good plan. I hope you can get a lot of them hatched this year.

Dominate traits are easy to breed out. Recessive color faults can be a little more of a concern. It can re surface endlessly without test mating to insure it is bred out.

My Catalana project birds had a white legged breed as an outcross. I did not want to deal with yellow legs. Yellow legs could have haunted me endlessly without testing to see who the carriers were.

So that is how I decide what I will tolerate or not with these project birds. What kind of trouble will it be to get passed it. Often it is not as simple as culling for it.
