Poultry Breeds of Spanish Ancestry

Here's a shot of a pullet that has nice long legs. She's half and half in the sun so she looks a little strange. I won't be using her for breeding this year as I'm trying really hard not to use birds before their first big molt... that way I can tell what I really have in my yard.

Here's a young male. He's pretty nice. Lacing is undefined but it is sort of there. I'm looking for a home for him.

This is my other large fowl male that I'm using this year. He is HUGE. Out in his run, I cannot get him to stand up like this. When he sees me, he crouches and drops his wing and no matter what I do, I cannot get him to stand up. These are pictures from earlier this winter. He'd gotten some frostbite on his comb/wattles and something happened to one of the points so that he was bleeding pretty good. Several hours after I noticed it, it hadn't stopped so I brought him in and cleaned him up. It stopped bleeding during that time. Then I had to dry him so he didn't catch a chill. I took advantage of his posture and got this photo.

This hen is his mother and she lives with him right now. I'm thinking I'll put another male over her later this spring. She's beautiful but VERY timid around the other hens so she lives with him. I also noticed today that she walks kind of low too but when she stands up, she looks really good.

This hen is one that I am planning to use the big male above over. She could be taller and that's about all I would change about her.

So, I have this ongoing issue with that big male. He gets some scabby looking stuff on his comb that eats holes in it. There is no infection. I've had it on other birds too and I've managed to get it cleaned off of there before it ate holes but I haven't had the same luck with him.

You can tell he's big. That is my hand and his comb is probably as big as my hand. He's definitely a load when you pick him up.

Have any of you ever seen this before? Can you tell me what it is? The best I can do is try to keep it from going all the way through his comb. I just don't know what I'm dealing with.

look at 5th paragraph...just a thought

Thanks!

The Buff Minorca cockerels were very calm and sweet. No aggression noted. It just about killed me to get rid of them. I will get more one day.

Your birds are lovely too Hangtown Farms!!

I am enjoying seeing everyone's birds. What a great thread!
I agree I love all the Spanish Breeds
I have to focus mostly on my Crele Penedesenca and work with the Empordanesa.
I am dabbling with the black penedesenca too

when I spoke to Laurie ( Mother Mastiff ) today I was encouraged what she told me about not to worry yet about my black pens rooster with the lack of white ear lobes.
since his sister has them i know the gene is there.
She also mentioned Dr. Francesch told her that White Empordanesa and partridge penedesenca crossed should hold all the genes for the other Empordanesa varieties
I love my roosters comb.

Ringworm? I don't think so. I appreciate your trying to help but ringworm is highly contagious. This rooster lives with a hen, she has no sign of it. There are two cockerels right next to them... no sign. Three bantam orpingtons next to them on the other side... no sign. I've handled the area and cleaned it without disinfecting my hands afterwards... no sign.

Any other thoughts?

I found a picture of someone's leghorn that looked the same and they tried all kinds of different things on it and nothing helped. Then I saw some information regarding Braggs apple cider vinegar and they mentioned that the acidity of this stuff would kill most things... bacteria, germs, fungus, etc. So, I think I'm gonna try it and see if I can get rid of it.
