Oh, forgot to say... I BETTER have a good thermometer. I drove all the way to Reno (1-1/4 hours) to a cigar shop and paid I can't remember exactly how much, I'm thinking it was somewhere anywhere between $10 - $20 for the thing. I had just had a very bad experience with a hygrometer that kept telling me I didn't have enough humidity. I had just moved to this desert the summer before and so I really had no idea. So, to make a long story short... very bad hatch... and yes some hatched. Many had crooked toes, others were kind of mushy and still others had some pretty big issues with the tendon of the hock joint. I replace the battery every spring.

Just checked my thermometer and it says it is 98* in there. So, do I just put the #7 toggle up?

Move the one that is up down and then move the next highest one up. It should be 6 down and 7 up. You want to get closer to 100, but give it 24 hours to stabalize. for the next hatch, just go up one number and see what happens.

You are fine tuning the hatch so you do not want to make big changes.

98 is too low. Safe incubation is 98.5 to 100.5.

Ok, they've been moved into the living room, in a cubby compartment of our entertainment center so its in sort of a closed space that is open on the front. I turned off #6 and turned on #7. So, now we wait and see what the new temperature is? My thermometer does not measure fractions of a degree so should I aim for 99 or should I aim for 100? They are on day 6 right now and they've been in the incubator (at apparently 98*) for 5 days and in the hatcher at 99* for one day.

And what size surface area do I need to attain 35% humidity?

ETA: Just saw your last post Ron. Thanks. I will take it slow.

They're a little hard to see but here are the 2 & 3 day olds chowing down on their fermented feed. The one on the right had just grabbed a beak full and left the immediate area to keep it all to himself. The picture is a little bit deceiving in that both of these chicks are black.

The look very nice!

This is the thermometer/hygrometer I have. Just a quick online check and this one is selling for $21.95 Sounds about right.

It is a Hovabator, styrofoam thing, model 1588.

Temperature has come up to 99* since I switched it. I also added a water dish that is about 4" square. Hopefully I can get a little bit of humidity, and not too much.

That will work much better!

I don't even know how to adjust mine either lol. I will look at it when I open it again. its running steady though so I don't want to mess with it. Cant you just push the button that says temp up?

I read your note that you added water and thought you said you added dish water to a 4" square lol
mine has 2 channels on the bottom one in the middle and one on the side.
when I add a cup or 3/4 cup of water to the side its bumping mine to about 40% 2 days later I do the same. wonder if every Genesis is a little different
