Poultry Breeds of Spanish Ancestry

Update on my Partridge Pendesenca/Maran eggs. One is pipping tonight and peeping too. Tomorrow will be exciting to see how many more are having "a coming out party".

I am also awaiting a shipment of P.P.'s next week, which is to include cockerel's as well as more hens. Hope they turn out to be decent birds.... I don't have any breeders near me that I know of. Eventually I will have to ship some eggs for diversity and improvement.

good luck on the hatch and chicks

My partridge Penedesenca/Maran chicks are hatching. Many are DIS but at least I am getting a few. I must have done something that was not kosher for them... I'll have to read more.

One is out of the shell, another one has a hole pecked. The hatched one is a dark grey with ox horn beak and grey legs. It will be interesting to see it mature. More may be viable but I'll have to wait and see.

Another thing of interest is they took more like 26 days to start hatching. The person I bought them from had the same experience. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

My shipped chicks will be here on Tuesday or Wednesday. They will be close enough in age to brooder together. I don't think telling them apart will be a problem.

wow 26 days. was your heat too low? Penedesenca usually take a day longer in my experience. I can not hatch them with other eggs as the others hatch earlier and mess up my hatch.

The temp was right around 99.5 but maybe the thermometer is not real accurate. I have another thermometer. I think I'll add it and see if they register the same.

I thought that was a really long time too. I set 25 eggs and all were candled and started forming. ????? Something went wrong and now I am wondering what. It is a new 'bator but a still air. I ordered a fan for it for the next hatching.

That is what thermometer I was using. I've been watching but not seeing anything else. I'll try harder to find something. Do you recommend a certain brand? I have a probe but I use it for the barbecue. I could wrap it in foil and use it until I find another.

Little black chick doing well... other still in shell. Should be hatched by morning as the hole is the size of my pinky tip.

Wish I had a PP roo as the hens are really putting out the eggs now. Four out of five hens almost every day. Great little layers and they do not eat nor make as much of a mess as the Brahmas did. The water even stays cleaner longer. I really like these hens. The Maran roo can go away. I'm not real fond of him.
