Poultry Breeds of Spanish Ancestry

The two partridge Penedesenca in the first picture seem very good, maybe look a bit heavy, but the color is very good and well defined. I am proud to see that across the world there are people interested in my little country hens.

Do you have roosters of this variety?

I do have a Rooster and a cockerel.

They are nice guys. I will get a picture tomorrow.

Well, I'm kind of aggravated. It has taken forever to get my new incubator functioning satisfactorily but now it's already heating up outside.

Last year I hatched late and more than half my large fowl are being used for bantams because they just didn't reach full size due to the heat. I have a few large fowl eggs in the incubator now. I have one hen I REALLY want to hatch from so I will continue to collect from her for a couple weeks more.

I will likely do some more bantams as its ok to raise them in the heat as it makes them smaller.

So, other than that, I guess I'm finished hatching for the year... and I don't even have one single chick on the ground yet. I have some mixed breeds due on Monday. Next Monday I have some due and then 9 days after that, I have some more due. I just put that last group in last night so I don't know how they're looking for fertility yet.

I'm really amazed at some of these mixed breed chicks! The eggs have been through the mill, I can tell you. From being too hot, to too cold and with too little humidity every so often, it's a wonder that any of them have hatched today... the due date. Right now, I have 3 in the brooder, one is nearly zipped all the way around and complaining loudly, and then I have six more (I think) that have pipped.

Hopefully the morning will find me with little fuzz balls trying to get out of their baskets.

I'll be up for another hour or so to make sure temperatures are as stable as I can get them before heading off to bed.

I checked the complainer and it's membrane had dried too much and it was stuck. So, I moistened the membrane with a few drops of warm water and the chick is still complaining loudly but now it can move and has almost pushed itself free of the shell.

FREEDOM! It's FREE!

These chicks ara a variety of Black Penedesenca, improved for meat production, they mature in less time than the traditional variety, and produce a lot of delicious meat. Ready for process in 14-16 weeks for a 3,5-4 kg of live weight.

The IRTA carried out the process of improvement, with the goal to create a variety that was profitable in alternative raising systems and that was supporting the characteristicss of the traditional Penedesenca, the same thing they did with the Catalana del Prat Lleonada and the Empordanesa Roja.
