Poultry chat thread

I received 7 female day-old chicks on 4/4/2022. Barred Rock, Delaware, Light Brahma, Buff Brahma, Black Australorp, Buff Orpington and a Black Jersey Giant. Just found out on another thread that my Black Jersey Giant is probably a rooster.
These babies are just pets. I welcome any eggs I might get but didn’t want any reproduction.
Now, my heart wants some hatchlings. But my brain knows that rehoming any roosters might be difficult.
I know how you feel! My beauty had an egg under her this morning it was her egg and I really wanted to "forget" it for 21 days and let it hatch my heart was saying it may happen to a beautiful black silkie hen from my two paint silkies but my brain said it also might hatch into another rooster that you don't need or want right now.

I'm having problems with chicken maths, in that the idea is for excess cockerels to be dinner, but I keep getting ones I want to keep and we're only got so many hens and space.
I just don't no what to do.

Lacey. My snuggler.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but how come your chickens keep dying?
I lost 3, they were pullets. I think I have some kind of respiratory problem in my flock that only affects the younger ones. She was open mouth breathing like adjusting her crop all day then the next she passed. I haven't lost any other since and separated the younger ones from the adult till they are 20 weeks. Everyone is healthy now.

I'm glad to hear that!
Me too, I lost 2 of my first four EEs and 1 silkie pullet. What's weird is they all had different yet slightly similar symptoms and none of the adults had problems. So now the 2 remaining pullets are in a separate coop on Chick feed till 20 weeks so in 3 weeks they can come out of there. They are good now but I lost 3 pullets every 2 weeks I lost one. 😢 I feel SOOOO bad for my broody silkie cuz the other silkie was her "baby"

Well my silkie is at it again.....stealing pullets for herself. She has "claimed" my 6 month old barred rock/silkie as her "baby". They are snuggled together in the nest box and when I touched the pullet she stuck her head under my silkie. It's weird yesterday the pullet was pecking her and today they are cuddling. I will say it's the happiest I have seen my silkie since her friend died.
