Poultry Dust?

Ohhhh.... this sounds like so much fun. Do I have any volunteers???

What happens if I just ignore it, will they get sick?

Serious infestations of lice and mites can lead to other problems, such as weakness and anemia, since the bugs feed on the chicken's blood. You could possibly just fix them a dust bath full of poultry dust and let them dust themselves. It couldn't hurt if you'd rather not do it yourself.

For frontline this is what I do - please understand that this is completely off label and I only use it on chickens. Please understand that any animal can have a reaction to medications so use with caution.

Over 10 lbs = 4 drops
7-10 lbs = 3 drops
5-7 lbs = 2 drops
< 5 lbs = 1 drop

I use regular frontline topspot for dogs - NOT plus.

It doesn't matter which size since the concentration is the same only the volume is different. I use the 89-132# size since it is the most economical.

I have used the spray in the past but it currently is not available - supposed to be back late summer or early fall.

Well, I bucked up and did it myself. I found a video on-line with a man showing how to do it. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. So tonight they got a good dusting and I got a good shower!

I never saw any actual critters, but I sure feel better about it now. I was very thorough!

I've been using Buhach ("since 1876, made famous during the Alaskan Gold Rush") to keep the mosquitoes away when I'm in the backyard or camping. I actually first heard about it when reading a book about Olaus and Mardie Murie and their lives in early Alaska.

I noticed that Buhach is also recommended for lice on chickens. Since it is only made of powdered pyrethrum flowers, it may be a more natural insecticide. I have to order it online from the company because I've never seen it in stores.

I'm new to raising chickens, so I'll be on the look out for lice. (You're right...I'm starting to feel itchy.)

Thanks

I have used the spray form of Frontline. It's not available in the US now & has to be ordered from Canada.
