The SS 3 piece nipples that QC (and FarmTek) sell are actually replacement nipples for pre assembled drinker sections (10' +/- long) made with square PVC tubing. At assembly time in the factory the SS nipples are turned into the PVC pipe and cut their own matching female threads. They are then shipped assembled with the three components of the nipple in place where the trigger pin and the metering pin can not become dislocated.

For the backyard user I have thought of no situation that these nipple could be less than frustrating. That is why I do not offer them for sale.

The SS threaded body is nice to cut its own way into plastic but the two loose pins will sooner or later become a problem unless you have the square tubing or use 3/4" PVC VERY CAREFULLY.

Thanks for this information!! The 3 piece SS nipples have dumbfounded all of us, we like the plastic one piece screw in nipples the best so far!!

How did you get your chickens to use the nipples?

I ordered the screw in ones from QC and they are on sale for 89 cents each so for 22 dollars with the shipping I bought 20 of them. I plan on using pvc pipe connected to a 5 gallon pail or I thought about hooking it to a toliet tank setup (installed inside of the 5 gallon bucket) but also add a shut off valve so I can use the bucket for medicating. Any thoughts? anyone doing this already?

that will work just fine either way the most important thing to remember, they will not work under any vacuum so you have to have a vent of some sort, and your birds will take to them right away, just take there old water and there curiosity will take them to the nipples, I use them from day one

I was amazed at how quickly the birds, even the babies, took to the nipples. Just get their attention by tapping it to make a drop fall out... they recognize instantly that that's where the water comes from.

Very happy that I saw this thread... planning on getting a whole bunch of the waterers to outfit the whole farm!

Order the one piece nipples- I believe they are orange in color- The nipples that come apart are terrible and don't work very well. I put 4 one piece nipples in a 5 gallon bucket and my chickens took to it within 5 hours. Works great and the water never get nasty. Put a light fixture mounted on the top lid with a 40watt bulb and you will be ice free in the winter.

Sorry to dredge up an old topic but I was looking at the QC website for these nipples and noticed that the link pasted here several times recommends the plastic screw in nipple for broilers and they have a slightly different style for layers. What's the difference and which do you recommend for my BR and SLW layer hens? I plan on using a 5 gallon bucket in the run and was trying to decide if I would also need a (smaller-2 gal?) bucket in the coop or if they would go outside when they were thirsty.

Revision: blond moment... My coop sits 2' off the ground so I'm going to have to hang the 5 gallon bucket outside the coop and use PVC to make the waterer underneath for clearance reasons.

I ordered some of both from QCS. My primary interest was in the screw-in type which I'm planning on using with schedule 40 (thick) pvc pipe. The push-in type I figure I might use with thin-walled vessels such as milk jugs, 2-liter drink bottles, or even maybe 5-gallon buckets...I guess they could be used with pvc pipe, too.

I guess it depends on how you intend to use them.

I used the screw in type in buckets no problem. Simply drill the hole slightly small and screw in the nipple. I used a little caulk on the threads before I screwed it in and then around the hole on the out side.no leaks . I also got mine from a company off eBay a lot cheaper than farmtek.
