Poults hatched! But... of them is not like the others! PIC

I bought BR eggs and am thrilled to have hatched out 6 poults a couple of days ago. All are doing well, eating, drinking, active and cute as can be. But, one of them is larger than the others yet a day or two younger, and most importantly, doesn't look like a BR.

Any idea what the darker poult might be? My knowledge of poults is pretty much limited to just BR's. Thanks!

Some kind of wild or bronze? Merriam, Wild Eastern, etc?? I would ask the seller what kind of turkeys they raise, other than what you bought.

But BR you mean Barred Rocks? cause non of them look like BR's?

BUT one does not look like the others...LOL

LOL, I confuse myself from time to time since my neighbor has Barred Rocks.... these are Bourbon Red turkey chicks. They're SO cute and personable, even at just a couple days old!

Steve, thanks for venturing an educated guess... I do plan on asking the seller as soon as I located her contact info. Whatever variety it is, I love the little critters already!

the poult is going to be a Narri,bronze or eastern wild.

These three look identical as poults, can tell the difference around 4-5 weeks old when the narris will start to molt out grey feathers ande become lighter and the bronze and wilds will remain dark

I would throw out the eastern wild. looking on feathersite they have more of a solid darker color on the head plus they wouldn't be the largest poult. check on the poult pic at the bottom

The bronze pictured have the line down the back of the head, and the line down the back, plus they would be larger than a BR.

It's hard to tell from the pic but the Narri's don't appear to have the defined lines like the Bronze do. The Narri's and BR's are about the same size as adults so a Narri poult wouldn't be overly larger than a BR

The 3 look closely alike as poults but if you study them there are differences when you look at the pics on feathersite. Maybe somebody that raises them side by side will chime in and provide more info.

Whatever this little one is I'm happy to have it... LOL, just REAL happy if it turns out to be a Bronze for my neighbor!

Bronze Poult Description
Down color in the poult at hatch consists of a light brown base color. The head of the poult is mottled and contains parallel streaks of dark brown or black. The upper body parts are mottled and streaked with dark color that may be brown or black. The under color of the ventral body surfaces are are a yellow-white to medium gray coloration.

Narragansett Poult Description
At hatching, the down coloration of the Narragansett poult is indistinguishable from the bronze. The gray coloration does not become apparent until the birds are between six and eight weeks of age. This plumage is a modification of the typical bronze coloration observed in the adult bird. In the Narragansett, the bronze color is replaced with a steel-gray color.

Wild Type Poult Description
Down color on a day old wild type poult consists of the following. The poult's head has a light brown base color that is mottled with dark brown and black pigment. The under color of the dorsal down is reddish yellow. The ventral body surface from the neck to the tail is yellowish-white with a medium-grey under color.


We have raise all three together and they are hard to tell the difference between till they get older. I know from first hand that they all look alike. Even the descriptions of them are all the same !! That is because they are at hatch time till they get older and go thru their first moult.
