Hi all,
I have a silkie hen, not sure how old, who has started singing the egg song this week. Will a hen practice the song before she starts to lay, or could she be 'encouraging' our neighbor's hens? I haven't found any eggs yet and was just wondering if i should be keeping an eye out.

I got my first egg from one of my pullets yesterday and she's been singing the egg song for over a week now. I kept saying she's practising! Looks like she was! She was also very curious about the older hens laying and started playing with any eggs she found.

Egg song?

Got my first egg yesterday--dragged my b/f out of the house to come see! I was surprised, since my three aren't even four months old yet. Can you describe the egg song? Wondering if any of their recent vocalizations could be described as such.

"Buck buck buck BA GAWK!!!!!!!!!"

Some do the song before they have begun to lay. Some do it right after they lay. And some do it any old which what time b/c, hey, it's Tuesday.

Here's an example:

LOL, perfect description. My girls all sing for each other when they get going, and it is extremely loud!!

Oh. I *wondered* why my black Australorp, Aretha, was doing an impression of Ethel Merman.

Finally heard the egg song today! My hens have been laying for two weeks but today was the first time I heard it. It's very...distinctive.
