I have noticed that layer cakes are off, but I have not noticed a big difference in the finished block. Have you doubled checked your 1/4 " foot, sew line? That is usually my problem. I think your trying to be too much of a perfectionist.Good Morning Ladies!! Just a question for those of us that used the precut layer cakes and charm packs. Did any of you have any trouble with them not being completely square? When I laid them out on my quilt mat, they was as much as 1/8 of an inch off on opposite corners. I was afraid if I tried to square them, they would not have been the 10" and 5", so I didn't . The charm packs were the ones that were the hardest. I cut the white squares exactly 2.5, but somehow when I sewed them to the other 5" squares, some of the squares were up to 1/4" smaller. This is the first time I have used pre-cuts, so didn't know if this is usual, or just me. It could be my perfectionism coming out, but I did notice the white squares that I cut myself from strips were a lot more easier to use than the charm packs and didn't have quite the differences in measurements. The reason I'm asking is for the Arrowhead blocks. I'm trying to decide to use layer cakes, or just cut my own 10" squares. I'm going to make 2 quilt tops, one for the swap and one for my nephew's graduation quilt, {a year late!) Just interested in your opinions!![]()
Did everyone square your blocks up before you sent them?
I'm sure your blocks are fine but I will check them and let you know, and telling on myself again, I usually square up the block when I sew it. I just can't seem to cut a straight line to save my life, yes I use rulers!! Or I cut and do wonderful then the brain goes dead and I end up with miscuts, So for me precuts save a lot of heart ache. I do measure twice and cut once but Murphy always comes to play.Ladies~ I want to apologize in advance for some of my blocks. Some of them are not coming out very square. I think triangles aren't my friend! So kat, if you can tell when you are dividing them up, just give me the worst ones back. I've even taken a couple of them apart and redid them and it helped a little, but not much. My petals are the ones that came out on the short side. Not sure why, but they were a charm pack and were a little wonky diagonally. So don't know if that was the issue or it was my sewing, but I guess they are what they are. I'm not sure if I will get them in the mail today before the PO closes. I have Bible school this evening and need to get some things ready for it. They will go out tomorrow for sure if not this afternoon.![]()
I'm sure they are just fine. We sometimes worry too much.I checked all my blocks to make sure they were the right measurement and my sewing machine is set on a scant 1/4" seam. It has a little guard on the foot to put the fabric against. I tried to eyeball them as I sewed as to being straight and even and they looked good until I laid them out on the mat and saw how some of them are off. All of my fabric were pre-cuts except the one I bought, a yard of white, to cut my own 2.5 squares from. And when I cut them out I double checked my measurements. I'm like you, if I don't pay attention, I miss cut, but not this time. Just look at them and like I said, if you think they are rejects, send those back to me. I didn't square these blocks up. I thought the recipients might want to do that as they sew them.
