Spied a dark grey coyote the other day down the road mid day. The coat was a blend of dark grey with some lighter grey and or darker spots, hard to recall now as I was driving by and it was heading into the field. With the ears so large and the body long, but not so filled out, I first thought fox, but it was too large, and too dark.

Any other Midwesterners to chime in on this?

Not Midwesterner, but we've got a gray wolf who travels through our property a couple times a year. HUGE animal. I'm going to look up pics of prairie wolves.

I'm from south central Iowa and I've seen 2 wolves.
No joke.
Once was over 20 years ago, and the last time was around 5 years ago. The most recent was in the field across the road from our farm. I saw it when I was getting the mail, and all the hair on my neck stood up. I told my husband I wasn't going to say anything because when I said I saw one before people laughed at me.
Then our neighbor called the same day and said a wolf was on his property and then 2 people drove by and told me that they saw a wolf across from our farm.
So yeah.
Scared the shit out of me, but who's laughing now.

I had one walking along our fence on the hill above our house - not the perimeter fence, but the fence around our front yard. Not more than 10 feet from me. Her head was level with the top of the fence. She was a very pale gray. She looked at me and kept right on going. My husband was in the driveway (about 1/3 mile dirt road) and saw her loping up the hill.

She is tracked by California Fish & Game. Their website said she'd been spotted on their tracker in our area. She just passes through here 1x or 2x a year. I NEVER thought I'd actually see her.
