We do have lots of black coyotes in Florida, and there is some speculation that the black wolves we had were in fact a kind of coyote. For some odd reason black is a naturally-selected favored trait in Florida mammals. For a long time we were the only place known to have black bobcats. However, Florida panthers are not black, contrary to urban legend. Florida panthers are just Florida adapted cougars and only come tan or fawn colored. There are no known black leopards or jaguars here. There may be black jaguarundis. Jaguarundis have never been confirmed in Florida but many biologists have long suspected a cryptid population of them is here.
