Prairie Wolf

We do have lots of black coyotes in Florida, and there is some speculation that the black wolves we had were in fact a kind of coyote. For some odd reason black is a naturally-selected favored trait in Florida mammals. For a long time we were the only place known to have black bobcats. However, Florida panthers are not black, contrary to urban legend. Florida panthers are just Florida adapted cougars and only come tan or fawn colored. There are no known black leopards or jaguars here. There may be black jaguarundis. Jaguarundis have never been confirmed in Florida but many biologists have long suspected a cryptid population of them is here.

Here’s a coyote with a lot of black on him I killed while deer hunting. I edited the pic to remove any graphic parts. I shot him head-on with a high powered rifle, so it done a number on him. This cleaned-up pic shouldn’t bother anyone. But I’ll leave it as an attachment and not insert it in the message.

I’m in the Upper mid-west where coyote and wolf are common. OPs pic looks large for average coyote. prob a coyote but maybe juvenile wolf or hybrid.
Dark or black-that sounds like wolf or a hybrid.
There are grey wolves where I live in UP Michigan and they are commonly heard, occasionally seen with a few local packs that number in the teens.
I have seen many greys but ever only saw one dark, near black wolf one time in the northern most county about 24-25 yrs ago when I was hunting a very remote spot for blk bear. It likely crossed a frozen Lk Superior.
